Kagome is our female lead. She lived in modern Tokyo in 1996 with her little brother, Souta, her Mother and her Grandfather in a temple shrine. The story starts on the day of her fifteenth birthday, and she is thinking how she doesn't really care about history, but little did she know that she would soon be thrust back into history. She's a freshman at her highschool (fourth year Junior High), and is living a pretty normal life until one night she falls into the well looking for her pet cat. Souta told her that Buyo (their cat) went into the well, so she enters the little shrine around the well when she is attacked by a centipede-demon (Mistress Centipede) that emerges from the well, which is a youkai, or demon. Kagome is pulled into the well by Mistress Centipede who says she wants the Shikon no Tama, or four souled jewel. Kagome claims that she doesn't know what the Centipede-lady is talking about and panics. She is able to protect herself by using a purple light as a sort of barrier. She also rips one of the youkai's arms off, and the centipede seems dead. When Kagome awakes, she thinks that she was only dreaming and climbs out of the well, to find herself in a strange forest. She runs off to where her house is supposed to be and comes across a large tree with a boy pinned to it with an arrow. She approaches the boy to find that he is asleep, then she notices his doggy ears. She wants to feel his ears and does, but then she decides to leave, but she's attacked by villagers who believe her to be a tanuki. The priestess of the village, Kaede, realizes that Kagome looks just like her sister who died fifty years ago, Kikyou. Mistress Centipede attacks the village that night, and Kagome leads her into the forest, towards the sleeping boy. Kaede is surprised to learn that Mistress Centipede wants the Shikon no Tama from Kagome, who still has no idea what it is. Once Kagome arrives, the boy awakens, claiming to smell the woman who killed him, Kikyou. He yells at Kagome, who he thinks is Kikyou. Kagome gets angry as says that she's not Kikyou. Inuyasha realizes that the smell of the girl isn't Kikyou and simply watches as the centipede attacks Kagome, ripping the Shikon no Tama from her body. The centipede eats the jewel, and Kagome releases the boy who quickly kills the youkai. Kagome picks up the jewel and the boy demands the jewel from her. Kaede has arrived and puts a magical rosary around the boy's neck, and now every time Kagome says the magical word (Oswari...translated to Sit), he is smashed face-first into the ground and held there for a few seconds. Kaede then says that Kagome is Kikyou's reincarnation. Inuyasha doesn't believe this, and Kagome is still confused. Kagome then accidentally shatters the Shikon no Tama into dozens of pieces, and Inuyasha joins her on the quest to recover the pieces and put the jewel back together again before other youkai can use the jewel shards to destroy the world.
