GEARS

This page will discuss the gearing aspects of micro mini pulling.

The first thing to consider when building a micro puller is the gear ratio parameters listed in the class rules. Next is to consider the pulling styles. There are two theories here, basically tortoise and hare.

The slow and steady theory, the toroise, is to run slow and easy, not spinning the rear tires. This style relies on weight to plant the rear tires, and no wasted motion. Every turn counts, much like snow driving. Slow pullers tend to be 200:1 and slower on the gear ratios.

The high speed theory, the hare, is to run as fast as possible. This style relies on high wheel speed and momentum to accomplish the mission. The theory is to build up as much speed as possible when traction is good, to allow the momentum to carry the pull when traction falls off. These tractors tend to be under 200:1 ratio, with many running in the low 100:1 range.
