Custom Front Bumper - 02/2003

I did not like the wimpy factor bumper and wanted something with a better approach angle so I decided to build a new bumper.

First I took the factory bumper and Westin brush guard off.

Then I removed the unneeded sheet metal.

Here is the steel used for the project. It is all 120 wall.

I started with 2, 2"x2" brackets.

These were welded directly to the frame.

Here is the center section it is built out of 2"x5" and has a 3" plate welded to the back of it.

My friend Tony, traded off welding and grinding with me which made the project go much faster.

Then the sides were welded on, these were built out of 2"x3".

These also had a 3" plate welded to the back of them.

I then welded some small angled pieces of 2x2 to fill the gap between the 5x2 and 3x2. I was going to take them all the way to the end but after a suggestion from Checo/Sergio, who was over on saturday, I decided to take it only half way.

It was then painted and bolted on. I decided to bolt it to the brackets so it can be easily removed and modified.

Here it is installed.

Here both front tires are off the ground being lifted by the bumper. It was very strong and did not even budge. The Hi lift however, fell over just as I was taking the picture. Another reason to never work on your truck with a high lift. No body was touching it and it gave no warning.

The skid plate will be mounted on the angled part of the brackets.
