Wapta Glacier - Bow Hut to Peyto Hut

Home | About Me | Alpine Climbs | Scrambles | Ice Climbs | Mountain Links | Guidebooks |

Note for Aug 21-26, 02: - This was a trip lead by Rod Church from the Central Alberta ACC. We started out by hiking to the Bow Hut from Bow Lake. We spent two nights at the Bow Hut, then traversed over to the Peyto Hut for two nights. We learned cravasse travel and rescue techniques. The Bow Hut is a busy place year round. The Peyto Hut is more secluded, and the views from the front porch are perfect.

Dates Summited -Aug 21-26, 02

Location - Banff National Park

On the approach to the Bow Hut. This was a very hot day. After leaving Bow Lake, you hike on a well travelled path to the upper valley leading to a headwall below Mt. Olive.

In the upper valley with the headwall in the background. The hut is above a scree slope to the right.

A classique view of Mt. St Nicholas. This day was spent attempting St. Nich but we turned back on a loose scree section because of our group size.

Mt. St Nicholas on the right and Mt. Olive on the left.

On this day we summitted Rhonda North in cooler conditions. After descending, we traversed to the Peyto Hut where we spent the rest of our trip.

Descending Rhonda North's ridge.

This is our group descending to the Peyto Hut. The Peyto Hut is the little black dot in the middle of the picture above and to the left of the small tarn.

Holy Shit

This day we spent practicing glacier travel on the Peyto Glacier.

Looking towards Rhonda North and Rhonda South. The Peyto hut is located just above the rockband on the left.

On this night we had clear skies and a beautiful sunset. Later on the northern lights showed up.

Just as the sun goes down.

Looking back at the Peyto Glacier. On top of the glacial moraines we found this observatory station.
