Icehawks top Wolverines, 10 - 3In another difficult match Sunday night, the Icehawks skated past the Wolverines, 10 - 3. However, this game wasn't anything like the first game these two teams played. In fact, this marks the first time the Wolverines have ever lead coming out of the first period. They got a big first goal from wing Mike Giuggio off an incredible cross pass from Roman Gendler, and in general, offensive pressure was far higher than before, and in all, the Wolverines sneaked three pucks past them. "That first time, we screwed up a bunch of line changes and we all had that 'deer in the headlights' look on our faces," says defender Jeff Job. "We hung with that team last night for much of the game and that's directly related to people getting more comfortable playing the game and understanding what to do out there." Additionally, new roster additions and lines all seemed to work out favorably. On the minus side, the Icehawks' speed and endurance came alive halfway through the second period and held firm for the remainder of the game, netting them nine goals in 30 minutes. "I...think I psyched myself out before I ever took to the ice," notes Clinton Rogers, who faced 29 shots. "For some reason, I couldn't settle in and get [comfortable]...so I didn't skate well. I feel like I let the guys down a bit - we seemed to get deflated after a while, and that's when the lucky bounces started to occur," he says, alluding to a shot that slipped past his skate and another that bounced off of defender Daanish Khan. Still, optimism remains high among the member of the club, and there are still over half the games left in the season. Job sums up the energy and passion he and his teammates have perfectly when he says emphatically that "it's going to feel so good to pick up that first win!!!" |
