The Pentagram and the Pentacle

The Pentagram:
The Pentagram is one of Paganism and Wicca's most widely used magickal symbols. It is worn as jewelry, laid on the altar during ritual, and generally recognized by others as a symbol of alternative religion. However, contrary to popular belief, the Pentagram/Pentacle is not a Satanic symbol. The inverted Pentagram is often worn by Satanists, but upright it is no more Satanic than an upright Christian cross is when compared to the Satanic inverted cross.

Rich in symbolism, the Pentagram is a favorite among many Wiccans and Pagans. The points each stand for one of the 4 elements: Air, Earth, Water, and Fire, with the upper most point standing for Spirit. As a protective symbol, the Pentagram is one of the strongest, and once again most widely used by Pagans.

The Pentagram dates back thousands of years to somewhere around 3500 BC. Several religions have used this symbol, including the Christians who once used it as a protective talisman, and the Jewish people who believed it to be a symbol of the Five Books of Moses. It has been given such names as the Druid's Foot and the Witches' Star.

The Pentacle:
The Pentacle is basically the Pentagram with a circle around it, visually. Symbolicly, the Pentacle represents enternity, and unity, and shows the connection between the four Elements. Also, with the star seen as a symbol of the Man, the circle can represent the all encompassing love of God/dess.

As jewelry, the Pentacle is more widely worn than the Pentagram, and in ritual the usage is about the same. Some use one to the exclusion of the other, while others utilize both. This is a personal decision.
