When
William Avery was selected as the 14th pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Minnesota
Timberwolves fans knew that the future of the franchise looked bright.
Avery had helped lead the Blue Devils to the championship game in the 1999 NCCA
Tournament, in only his sophomore season. Avery's rookie year brought many
unexpected challenges. The Timberwolves' roster already included Terrell Brandon
and Bobby Jackson, so the young star's playing time would be limited. He
started the season sluggishly, posting unimpressive numbers. However,
after the All-Star break, Avery stepped up during Brandon's injury and helped
the Wolves remain stable. With Bobby Jackson headed off to Sacramento,
Avery will have to step up this season. Hopefully, Avery will continue to
improve and eventually become a major force in the Timberwolves back court.
