Last day for work in Zurich! And of course I have found a couple true bugs today rather than just silly config file issues. Oh well.
**10:21**
Apparently I don’t have much to type today. Going to ask one of the guys here about a good place to go for fondue. I found one in Rick Steve’s travel guide but figured I’d get a local opinion. The meat fondue is awfully expensive at the one place I looked at! You have to have a minimum of 2 persons and it is CHF 43.00 per person. I think we’ll stick with the Cheese fondue which is only CHF 25.00 per person. We’ll have to try a plate of raclette as well once I figure out what that is. Wikipedia sort of described it but I have a feeling it will be much more interesting in person. All I know is that I’m going to have to pop about 20 Lactaid pills before we go!

I sent mom on a mission today. She was planning a fairly easy day since she pretty much walked non-stop for 6 hours yesterday. I was reading in the travel guide that going to Lugano isn’t the most worthwhile trip but can still be scenic. It also appeared longer than what the guy was saying at lunch the other day. Mom’s mission is to hit the tourist office and find us a train ride or something to do on Sunday. Of course she woke up at 3am so I imagine she went back to sleep for a few hours after I left. :-)
**11:05**
Tomorrow we will start the day off with a trolley tour of Zurich. They give you a headset to wear to listen to the tour (in 8 different languages). It’s only 2 hrs long but should be fun. Then we will have lunch and hop a train to Alpamare. This may be questionable. Hardly anybody I’ve talked to recognizes the name. According to the website it is the largest water park in Europe. I thought I read that it was indoors but the pics show lots of outside slides. It has an iodine-brine pool which is supposedly good for people with rheumatism. Eh, if it sucks we blame mom. Ha ha! There are saunas and the outdoor pool is heated to 30 degrees C. It would be awesome if actually snowed so we could swim outside in the snow. You can also pay extra for a massage. In any case, we’ll end up with a train ride around most of Lake Zurich so that will be cool.
**12:18**
Finally repeated a lunch destination. I know you are all extremely disappointed. We went to the same Thai place as last Thursday when the big client boss was here. I’m guessing that is his favourite. Good food though so I’m not complaining. It would appear a nice storm is moving in. The wind was blowing and some sprinkles starting. They guys said lots of rain and wind. Great. So I checked some weather sites and today it is supposed to be light rain and tomorrow heavy rain but the winds are only 12-14 mph. Could be wrong though. Still sucks it will be so rainy tomorrow though. It would be nice it turned into snow but I don’t think that will happen.
Alex and I reminded WH that today was my last day and his response was “I know.” I then said if there was anything in particular he wanted me to test or take a closer look at to let me know. “No.” Alrighty then! I feel so appreciated. Maybe I should just leave now… Then he starts into a discussion about 3 bugs the business found which initially made me nervous but then I realized none of them were actually bugs – just bad specs that didn’t clearly define what they actually wanted. Not my fault.
**12:37**
I certainly hope all my clothes are returned today. If not all I have are two pairs of dress slacks, stretchy workout type pants and 2 clean dress shirts. They have my jeans and two other pair of pants plus all my socks. I really should have noted exactly what I gave them. That owner should really hire people who speak at least German to run that place. Even if they didn’t speak any English – I can handle some German. Plus I have my German dictionary with me so I could use that. I didn’t know I’d need a Portuguese dictionary in Switzerland for crying out loud! And yes, I am in Switzerland not Germany for those of you confused. :-)
Mom took a bunch of pics yesterday and potentially a few today. I’ll try to get them uploaded tonight or tomorrow but be prepared for the “artist’s view” of Zurich.
Apparently there is a good fondue place a block from the hotel. I’ll swing by there on the way back to check out the menu (many places have them posted outside the door)
**13:15**
Even though the really fun and touristy part of my trip is just beginning I’m starting to miss home. It’s sad I’m missing all the snow and I’m so tired of eating all my meals out. And probably the scariest part of it all is that I totally miss going to gym. Can you believe that? I’m getting lots of walking in but it’s the not the same.
I guess I don’t look too obviously American – at least at first glance. People always try to talk German to me first. Then I give them a lovely deer in the headlights look and they quickly figure it out. A lady stopped me on the street the other day asking for directions. I mumbled something about English then she asked me again in broken English. Of course I still didn’t have a clue since I don’t exactly live here. Luckily another nice woman came along and said she’d help. Mom said it does look like I fit right in – I’m it has something to do with my nice work clothes because I know if I was wearing what I wear at home I’d definitely look like a tourist!
Seriously – I really don’t know why I’m still here. I’d love to go back to the room and take a little nap. Apparently it is time for another trip to SD – I’ve got a nice crop of split ends forming. I am supposed to go back down before Cheryl makes her big move back East. Maybe March.
**13:26**
To keep me (and you) entertained I thought I’d tell you some of the words/phrases that appear on my screen as I’m testing. Just to emphasize the boring aspect of this product.
Monitoring Owner
Control performance
Fraud Prevention
Technology Infrastructure Services
Platform
(are all ya’ll bored yet? No?)
EOY DE OE assessment
Management Assessor
Level of Automation
Adapted Test Frequency
BOY Assessment Completed? (okay, that one makes me giggle)
Information Processing Objectives
I think that’s enough for now. I’m falling asleep typing them!
**14:35**
This afternoon is dragging by. I have found a couple odd bugs but nothing related to the release so I’ll deal with them when I return home. They’ll get fixed in the next one (if then).
**15:00**
I was just getting some mixed results with further investigation into one of the bugs and I have to say it is the weirdest bug I’ve seen in a long time. I won’t try to explain because you won’t understand but trust me, it is strange.
**15:38**
I can’t believe it’s not even 4 yet. I think time has stopped. Maybe it’s because of the Doomsday Clock they flicked forward two minutes. All other time is retaliating. I’m guessing not long after Bush is out of office that it’ll get flipped back.
**16:01**
Well that’s annoying. Now they want me to work. :-)
**16:56**
Whew! Got that work stuff over with. Almost killed an hour even… About another to go. Now what am I gonna do? It’s 8am back home. I’m sure the cats are pissy because they are only getting fed once a day. They’ll get over it.
**18:01**
Please let them decide to leave soon. I hate to be here much longer… Besides, it is raining and mom was going to meet me over here. I don’t feel good about just leaving again like I did the other night.
**18:14**
It is very quiet over in that other room. Hmph.
I’ve noticed since I have been here and I have to explain things to people who don’t speak fluent English, that I tend to add a lot of unnecessary words in sentences. Is that an American thing? If I cut half the sentence out then they understand. I supposed it is just easier to explain things with fewer words. If I was at least as fluent in German as they are in English they would probably do the same thing for me.
**18:24**
Still no movements of leaving. Argh.
**22:08**
At 18:30 I walked over to the other office and asked if Alex was putting in a long night. Apparently not since he immediately started packing up his stuff. He walked back with mom and I and we decided to walk by the fondue place he had mentioned. It just so happened they had an opening right then so we could eat. I got to try my first real fondue. I won’t be doing that again. It was okay, I ate my fill of bread and cheese but really – how much of that can you take? At least now I can say I did it even if I don’t plan on doing that again! :-)
I’ll be back tomorrow with our latest adventure! There is word of a big storm tomorrow but according to all the weather I’m seeing it is winds up to 25mph and a quarter inch of rain. That’s nothing. All the big weather is up in Germany and across northern Europe.
