311 Biography

    311 all grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. Tim, Chad, and Nick all went to Westside High School together. Nick and Tim were in a band called the Eds, named after their drummer whose name was....Ed. They played cover songs of the Smiths, The Cure, and REM. Nick also played in the concert jazz band with Chad. At the same time, SA and P-Nut were going to Bryan High School together.

    Nick graduated early and moved to downtown LA in search of a career in music. Chad, P-Nut and Jim Watson were in a band called the Fish Hippos. Nick returned to Omaha for their graduation and played with them. Now 311 as we know it begins to take form. They called themselves Unity. The line up was slightly different. They had a keyboardist Ward Bones and Nick played rat bass (this was before P-Nut). He remembers that it was not easy to rap and play a funky bass line at the same time - as you can imagine. In '88-'89 Chad, Bones, and Nick moved to California trying to score a record deal, which seemed unlikely to happen in Omaha. It didn't work.  But that wasn't the end...

    Chad moved back and hooked up with P-Nut and the original 311 guitarist Jim Watson.  Chad and P-Nut played off of each other's unique styles well.  It was a perfect match! They asked Nick to join the band so they could play an opening gig for Fugazi on June 10, 1990. The next year Tim Mahoney replaced Jim as lead guitarist. SA was making guest appearances at the shows, and in '92 was added as a real member. The group self-produced and independently released three albums in Omaha: Dammit!, Unity, and Hydroponic, along with the little-known Downstairs EP, recorded in Nick's basement.  In their original form, these have been out of print for years, and are therefore very rare and valuable.

    They moved to LA. At this point 311 was living in one house, a small house at that (but it had a pool), had no record deal, and a grassroots following of fans that had heard their Omaha albums or caught them at shows.  They caught the attention of Eddy Offord, a popular record producer. They made a demo tape and were signed to Capricorn Records. Music (1993) was recorded and released under budget and under deadline, featuring much-improved remakes of several Omaha tracks.

    Four singles were released: Do You Right, Visit, My Stoney Baby, and Feels So Good. Do You Right made it to the Billboards and the video was shown *a little bit* on MTV. It is a great video with beautiful colors and a lot of very, very happy fans.

    We can imagine the tour for Music was pretty difficult because their RV exploded. Nick was driving and he noticed it was running hot. He pulled over, and saw smoke and flames by the gas tank. It blew up and they escaped with not much more than the clothes on their backs and the songs in their heads. Besides some singed eyebrows, no one was hurt and although it caused a big traffic fuss, 311 headlined the next day with borrowed equipment. You can hear all about the RV incident in the song Omaha Stylee: "My bros and I were driving the RV bleeding flames us leaping through fire surviving - Zoned with no home there was fire all on it - let me have my life I want it!" Nevertheless they finished their HUGE tour, crossed the US many times and their grassroots following of fans grew like crazy.

    Eddy Offord produced the next album as well. They released one video from Grassroots (1994), Homebrew. Grassroots didn't get much media attention, but was an important turning point in their sound.  It was supported by another massive tour, and 311's fan base was exploding by word of mouth.  

    Without any help from Offord, the third Capricorn album, 311 (aka The Blue Album), was released in 1995. They put out Don't Stay Home as a single, and toured again. Then in 1996, Down was released. With this song, 311 finally got mainstream attention from the radio and MTV. Record sales went way up.  All Mixed Up was released, and did just as well. With those two songs, 311 reached a lot of people that hadn't had access to them before and toured all over again.  The album went platinum, then double platinum, then triple.

    With their popularity came harsh rumors about the origin of 311's name.  High schools across the country banned 311 shirts based on allegations that it was a code name for Ku Klux Klan.  311 denied this, revealing that "311" was an Omaha police code for indecent exposure and they had seen the numbers on a ticket a friend received for skinny dipping.  Fans everywhere pointed out the strong messages of unity and positivity in 311's lyrics, and the rumors faded.

    In '96 311 released a long form video, Enlarged To Show Detail. It is a really awesome video and is absolutely necessary for a 311 fan! It has the videos for Homebrew, Down, and All Mixed Up, lots of interviews, backstage footage, and live performances, plus it comes with a bonus EP you can't get anywhere else. The EP contains the songs Tribute, Let the Cards Fall, Gap, and Firewater.

    August 5, 1997 - 311 released Transistor. Transistor is a 21 track album and was a gift to the fans. They actually could have made it a double album, but didn't want to charge that much. So they snipped and squashed as much material on it as they could - isn't that sweet of them!! Although Transistor didn't get great reviews from the critics, as the wise Hexum says, "Rock critics didn't put us here, they can't take us down." It is a lot more spacey and not as rock-oriented as the previous album, but it has a few amazing head-banging songs too. If you got any of the ones in the first issue, you found four stickers in your CD.

    Transistor was the first single, followed by Prisoner. Prisoner has a very cool video. Nick and SA are wicked dancers! It won Best Video in the Circus magazine readers poll.  311 released The Omaha Sessions and a live album entitled Live.  The Omaha Sessions includes remixes of selected songs from the independently released albums, and every song is remastered for better quality.

    On October 12, 1999, 311's much-awaited fifth studio album hit the stores. Soundsystem, supported by it's first single and video Come Original and a massive club/theater tour, completely delighted their fans. 311's playing the smaller venues let them return to the intimate feeling of their early years. Packing the clubs with hardcore fans was no problem. Shows on the Soundsystem tour sold out in mere minutes. This summer, they hit the road again to play arenas and festivals.

Tour History

In the late 1980's, 311 band members began performing live in projects such as The Eds, The Westside High Jazz Band, Fish Hippos and Unity. 311's first show under the name "311" was on June 10, 1990 opening for the band Fugazi in Omaha, NE. Now a decade later, after logging many road miles, 311 celebrate their ten year anniversary.

Although 311 toured from 1990-1992, we unfortunately do not have a proper record of these early tour dates. What we do have is a listing of all 311 tour dates from 1993 to 2000.

In the early 90's, 311 essentially lived on the road, building their grassroots following city by city. In the summer of '93, 311's RV and trailer caught fire as the band was on a Missouri highway. Their RV, trailer, equipment and personal belongings burned to the ground. Nonetheless, the band persevered. With borrowed equipment, the band was back on stage the next night for a rockin' show in Omaha!

For ten years, 311 has played hundreds of shows a year. An amazing feat, but no more amazing than the incredible live show 311 puts on night after night! Along the way, 311 has chosen an impressive list of opening acts on their way up including - Korn, No Doubt, Deftones, Sugar Ray and Incubus. 311 has also shown its diversity by playing the Horde Tour, Warped Tour, Temples of Boom Tour as well as many festivals from Roskilde to Smoke Out to radio shows worldwide.

311 have toured the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe. The band loves to play live and looks forward to many more adventures ahead. At this time, 311 would like to give a big shout out to all their fans who have supported the band on the road and helped rock the house!
