Puppies

Newborn pups are so cute. They are all fat and strong. Their eyes will open by two weeks of age. By three weeks old we will be able to begin understanding each pup's temperament. At six weeks of age each of the pups will be temperament tested. The ‘tester’ is a professional trainer and breeder herself. We use the world renown Volhard temperament test, the same test used on potential guide dogs, military / police dogs, drug dogs etc. We should have a fairly good idea of each pup’s core temperament through the test. Puppy buyers will receive a copy of their chosen pup’s results in the puppy packet. As our pups grow we do ‘stress’ tests. Starting from birth we begin handling them each day. We will put the pups on a variety of different surfaces, textures and temperatures (in moderation of course) before their eyes ever open. Reserch has proven that the more a pup’s brain absorbs from birth to 16 weeks the stronger they are both emotionally and physically. In fact, some scientist believe that early ‘stressing’ of pups actually prevents disease later in life.

Imprinting our Puppies

Three weeks of age is the fun time. We introduce many different sounds of varying volume and pitch - bang pots and pans, sound off alarms, play music of every type and style, speak in both loud ‘dominant’ and soft ‘soothing’ tones. We also teach the pups to come when they are called when they are three weeks. It is simple actually. Each time we feed them their gruel we say the word “Here”. Each time the pups see us and come bounding towards for attention we say “Here”. When we are playing outside with mom and her pups we run away from the litter saying “Here!” All our pups go to their owners with a solid recall, guarantied! At about five weeks of age we take nature walks with mom and her litter around our acerage. They meet the horses, the goat, play in the pond (weather permitting) and jump, leap and enjoy the outdoors. This accomplishes two things: it teaches them that people are to be followed, develops motor skills and acceptance of “the big scary world”.

Training our Puppies

The pups will take car rides and spend time at friend’s houses. They will meet a variety of adult dogs of all ages and sizes - we are quite careful to only expose them to animals and environments free from disease. All pups learn to climb stairs and manuver on baby size agility equipment. To top this off we begin training all pups their basic obedience at six weeks. Not only do they learn to come when they are called, the pups are also imprinted to: sit, down, stay, leash walking, playing ball, crate training, ‘no-bite’ plus, they are introduced to ‘clicker’ training. Through this we hope to produce a pup that adjusts quickly to your home, making your life just a little bit easier. If you live in the Dallas metroplex we also offer a free Puppy Preschool session in Rockwall Texas. For those not so local, we will be more than happy to help you find a reputable trainer in your area and give you advice over the phone.
