EMS

EMS? Why'd you choose EMS??
While in High school- I was part of a Medical Academy for students and in our senior year we were able to intern with someone in our field for a semester. Well, since I really didn't have a field chosen yet, my instuctor told me that Manatee County EMS was looking for riders. I liked it so much, I stayed with it for the whole year.

HOSA logo What's a HOSA??
Okay- you probably asked yourself this question at the first site of the word. HOSA stands for Health Occupation Students of America and what it basically is, is a program for students (be it high school or beyond) where they can compete against other students in their same field. Ducky and I competed in the EMT category and ended up placing 3rd in the state and 6th in the nation.

This is where it all started, First Responder class, a forty hour class that's basicly a more advanced first aid/CPR class. We took the class over our winter break... by choice, believe it or not :)

These are of me and Ducky at state competition in Orlando

Well, we ended up placing 3rd in the state, and they gave us this pretty metal.

This is Lt. Jerome Ruffing. He's the guy who taught us everything. He helped Jenny and I study and practice on the few nights he had off. He also helped kick off the whole EMS portion of the Academy of Medical Arts and Sciences and went to National Competition with us (he had to put up with us for a week, have sympathy for the poor guy...)

What's really scary is that Jerome got me and Jenny in the Bradenton Herald (our local paper).. This was my 15 minutes of fame :)

Bradenton Herald Article

These are all the people that were in my EMT class- which I passed and am now working as a certified EMT :) woo hoo!
The scary part is I will hopefully be in this year's April Paramedic Program.... watch out everyone!

Yes this is my goofy self in uniform

Links:

Here's a list of the links I'm using for medic school, there are a few I have not gone through extensively so if you find they aren't helpful, lemme know!

EMS House of DeFrance A very well constructed site with lots of good quizzes and info for medics (EMT and Paramedics included) plus there's bunches of gross (but educational!) trauma pics.

LessStress.com Prehospital Care simulator This is an interactive simulator mostly for EMT's but I believe there are some for Paramedics. It's kinda cheezy, but hey, if you're bored at work, it's still entertaining, while also work related!

New York ER RN This is a great site for anyone in the medical field, lots of reference materials and a couple quizzes for EMT's and Paramedics (and students!) alike.

InnerBody.com A great site for those of us needing a refresher course in anatomy :)

University of Miami This site provides a medical glossary that has a Medical Dictionary, a Medications and Prescriptions section and a Diseases and Conditions section

Safety City's EMS Page This is an awesome site for kids to learn about EMS and what we do

Sarnia.com Case Study This site has a bunch of scenarios that have multile choice answers that you send to the owner of the site and he will email you back... just a note that the site is Canadian so they might do things a little different than the US.

MEDTRNG.com This is my favorite site for reference materials.. It is a military related medical training resource but also has alot of beneficial info for civillian medics.

12 Lead EKG Study Rhythms Just as the name implies!
