Portfolio Assignments for the First Nine-Weeks
Portfolio Assignments

Portfolios are a way students can improve their grades. They are assignments that are weighted heavily (one test grade) where students can spend much time perfecting their performance. They are the students' opportunity to expand on their language skills and challenge themselves with deeper structures. Therefore, portfolio assignments should be done quickly and repetitively. The student should then pick among those items and turn in the best representation of the student's work. I, in turn, grade the portfolios based on effort, comprehension and quality. There are not points taken away for too much work, but there are many points deducted for not enough effort. Use these portfolio assignments to your advantage. Let them help your grade and not hurt it.

February 12 & 13, 2001 Research a German or Austrian composer and be prepared to tell at least 5 interesting things about the person. For extra credit, you may play a selection of works from this composer. Last year, we listened to students play the violin, the viola and the piano. If you don't play an instrument, you may also bring in a cd, cassette, .wav or .mp3 file to play in class.
February 28, March 1, 2001 Practice the poems on listed here. Practice, and with your best German pronunciation, read aloud one German poem ont a cassette tape. The more you practice these poems, the more solid and confident your voice will sound. If you do not have cassette tapes, I can lend you one. If you do not have access to a tape recorder, we will hold 1/2 of the class time to do the recordings. There will be NO TIME in class alotted for practice of these poems.
