The Wine Capital Racing Association was established in 2002 and was the brain child of Oliver RCMP Cpl. Dean Martin and his wife Joann. Both of whom are devoted gearheads. The theory behind the association was to find a location to give automotive enthusiasts a legal outlet to race their cars as opposed to the, always dangerous, street racing.Interested members of the local car club "The Coachmasters" enthusiastically joined in, and the group was formed. The idea was pitched to the local Town Council and received a favourable response. In preparation for their first race, the fledgling group sponsored two burnout contests hosted by Mr. JF Launier at his auto wrecking yard - Desert Auto Parts. Sufficient start up funds were obtained and the association was off and running. After planning over the Winter, we had a combination show n shine & race on June 5th, 2004. A successful car show was featured at the local community park followed by the race on 89th street in the Oliver Industrial area. A crude lighting system consisting of a discarded traffic light was used as starting lights. Times were provided by stop watch and speed by police radar. While very rudementary, the system worked well and we had a great day. With money raised from the initial event we purchased a proffessional Christmas Tree Starting System from Race America of California, capable of displaying reaction time, red light starts and ET. Armed with the new lights, we hosted our second event on the 6th of September. Over 90 vehicles attended as well as 2 JR Dragsters. We charged a nominal fee of $5 per car and drivers got an average of 10 runs throughout the day. All of the feedback was positive and the excitement is clearly growing. Proceeds from the Sept. 6th race were used to upgrade the light system to include printed time slips listing reaction time, elapsed time and trap speed. That is where we planned to stop for 2004 but due to an overwelming response & many requests, we have decided to stage a final race on October 10th, 2004. We are hoping to have at least 4 dates in 2005, stay tuned!
