19 trillion cubic feet of natural gas is used annually in the United States alone. Even though this may seem extremely excessive and expensive, the United States is largely self-relient when it comes to natural gas. Unlike oil, which is imported from many different regions of the globe, the US is able to supply most of its own natural gas, with most of the supply coming from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Of our very little imports of natural gas, about 3 trillion cubic feet per year, 94%, or about 2.9 trillion cubic feet per year, comes from Canada. This gas comes mainly from British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Alberta reserves. Canada's small population compared to its abundant gas reserves makes much of its total supply available for export. This decreases the price that the United States has to pay for the gas. It is further decreased by the close proximity of the gas fields to the US, and that it does not have to be shipped overseas.
