In the beginning... Castle Hedingham Cricket Club

The earliest reference to a cricket club at Castle Hedingham is in 1853, when Hedingham played against Essex Calves at Sible Hedingham.

The first club records proper, were in 1865 when Castle Hedingham played Sible Hedingham at Chapel Pasture, now the site of the children's playing field in New Park.

The club records show that the club reformed in 1873 at a meeting in the National School

In 1899 Saint Nicholas Cricket Club (as it was known then) was temporarily wound up as the ground, belonging to Mr. V.W. Taylor, was required for hop growing. The club reconvened the following year, at it's present site at Sudbury Hill, after Mr. J.H.A. Majendie offered the ground to the club

This offer was reaffirmed by Miss Musette Majendie on the death of her father, with the proviso that Castle Hedingham Cricket Club shall enjoy the use and privilege of the ground for as long as cricket continues to be played there.
