The Maldivian tourism industry has entered middle age with the celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2002. Tourism began as an economic venture with the first tourists, visiting Maldives in 1972. Since then the tourism industry has developed as a main source of livelihood for a vast majority of the Maldivians, with more than eighty nine resorts in eleven different atolls.

With the introduction of the tourism, two resorts were opened in the same year. One such resort which shared the silver jubilee celebration with the industry and Kurumba Village (the first resort opened in the Maldives) was none other than BANDOS ISLAND RESORT, which became the second resort to be opened in the Maldives.

 Bandos Island Resort was built first by the Crescent Tourist Agency, which began as the earliest tourist agency in the Maldives. The then President Ibrahim Nasir and prominent business men Koli Ali Umaru Maniku, Ahamed Adam and Kandi Ahamed Ismail Maniku owned crescent Tourist Agency.

Bandos Island Resort entered the tourism business with 28 rooms on 10 December 1972. A restaurant and a diving school were there at the time of the opening of Bandos. Most employees of the Bandos Island Resort when it opened were Maldivians and at the beginning there were 60 employed by the resort. During the same period two Maldivian women were sent for training to be employed later in Bandos Island Resort. Since then there has being a consistent increase in rooms from 28 in 1972 to 225 in 1996. Today Bandos Island Resort has 08 suits, 42 junior suites and 175 standard rooms. 

In 1978, with the abolition of the Crescent Tourist Agency, the management of the Bandos Island Resort was handed over by the Government to the present Managing Director Mr. Mohamed Waheed Deen. Mr. M.W Deen joined the tourism industry in the Maldives in 1976. Then he worked in the entertainment sector, and his main job was airport representative. 

In 1980, Mr. Deen established his own travel agency in Male’, under the name of Deen’s Orchid Agency. In 1982, Mr. Deen obtained lease of Bandos Island Resort from the Government of the Maldives for a period of five years. His development effort and contribution to the Maldivian tourism sector continued whereby Mr. Deen had a fresh extension lease of Bandos Island Resort for a further period of ten years from 1 November 1987.

Mr. Deen expanded his tourism business whereby in 1987, he established a company, with a foreign partner under the name of Orchid Holdings Pvt. Ltd. Lease of Bandos Island Resort was further extended to eleven years from 1st November 1998. In addition to that it has got further four years with the introduction of Maldives Tourism Act.  

Bandos Island Resort ventured through the business, where the resort has acclaimed a number of prestigious positions as a service provider in the Maldives. Apart from Mr. Deen being awarded the highest national award for his services to the tourism industry, Bandos Island Resort also received the honorary award of recognition, by the Government of the Maldives for the community services provided at the 1988 invasion of Maldives by foreign mercenaries. Also Bandos Island Resort has held a number of internationally recognized conventions, seminars and workshops. Among the many conferences held include the 9th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit, and various others on environmental issues, human resources development and economic cooperation. The resort is well known for its hospitality in welcoming guests from every corner of the globe.  

Today Bandos Island Resort has got the most modern facilities in the Maldives. As described by Mr. Deen “the crew on boat today”, under the Resident Manager Mr. Ibrahim Amir, “are building a better Bandos, and a home away from home to the staff from islands all over Maldives near and far”.
