GLAVINE, GUARDADO TO BEANTOWN ; JONES SWITCHES TEAMS...AGAIN: Thursday, April 24: New York Mets send veteran pitchers Tom Glavine and Eddie Guardado to Boston in exchange for 28-year-old left-fielder Jacque Jones and 26-year-old rookie reliever D.J. Carrasco. It is likely that New York made the move in an effort to save money. New York is expected to make a few more trades along the same lines in an attempt to get under the salary cap for next year. Having recently taken on big salaries Chipper Jones and Mike Piazza, the move puts the Mets just a few million over their projected 2004 cap.
CHANGING FOCUSES...EARLY SEASON SURPRISE: In a surprise move, Tuesday, the Oakland Athletics sent starting pitcher Tim Hudson to St. Louis in exchange for rising star Albert Pujols. Pujols, 23, has amassed 71 home runs over the course of his first 2 years in the major leagues, while maintaining a .322 batting average. The left-fielder has also scored 230 runs, knocked in 257 runs batted in, and reached safely for 87 doubles in that period. Tim Hudson, 27, has played in 4 major league seasons prior to the 2003 campaign. In that time, he has maintained a 3.42 ERA, with an average of 159 strikeouts, and an average of 16 wins and 7 losses per year, including a 20 win season in the 2000 campaign. The deal really changes the focus of a once pitching-dominant Oakland team into a more balanced club, while pitching hungry St. Louis has shifted from their pre-season status as one of the elite hitting clubs, into an organization with a much more evenly distributed talent pool. NICK JOHNSON and PAUL QUANTRILL were also exchanged in the deal. Oakland received some much-needed set-up support in the bullpen, while St. Louis paved the way to trade backup first baseman and Utility hitter Scott Hatteberg for New York Mets third baseman Ty Wigginton, a deal expected to go through later this evening. Wigginton bolsters one of the weaker minor teams in the league, as St. Louis continues to hurt its farm system by including the minor-league rights to reliever Tom Martin in the deal with Oakland.
