Click on the thumbnails to see a much larger version of the image.  In this tutorial, I'll be working with Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
After scanning your image (if it was drawn first on paper), you'll need to start a new layer.
Adding a layer is like adding a piece of plastic wrap (that you can draw on) to a regular piece of paper.  You can color on it and erase, but it never actually combines itself with the true drawing.  This way, if you make a mistake you can erase without disturbing the base.

Now you can begin slowly tracing your picture with a small brush on the newly made layer. After tracing and acquiring the desired effect, you'll want to return to the first layer (the original that you had scanned) and delete it. This will leave you with a cleaner version of your image.
This is when you'll want to start a new layer and add on the extra things; such as facial expressions, hair, and clothing (if you haven't already drawn them).
