Passing Time

"Passing Time" is the beginning of a trilogy. It was actually the final track recorded for the album. A pure intrumental, this song was intended to lead into the saga of troubled Rosemary by providing an uneasy, impatient beat. The listener feels that time is ticking, perhaps wasting away. As the impatience grows, a Pink Floyd-ian canned applause appears segueing into the definitive riff/beat of the final two trilogy songs.

Recording these songs were a bit difficult for Maddox. Because the three portions could very much be considered one extended song, coordinating a smooth transition between tracks was necessary.

"I had to eliminate the two-second gap between songs on a CD. I also had to find the definitive point in each song where it could be considered the ending point, and starting point for the next.

The title 'Passing Time' comes from a conversation I had with a 1st grade girl one morning. I had just finished a long night at work, and was resting in a coffee shop, but didn't want to go home just yet. The young girl sat beside me and began telling me the words she had learned to spell in her class. I listened, despite her Mother's insistance that she was annoying me. When she asked me what I was doing, I said I was simply passing time. That term means nothing to a 7 year old, so I had to explain it further. Only then did I realize, that there was no real meaning in 'passing time', because you can't really control it. Time passes YOU by, you have no say in the matter.

As for the actual recording, I wanted something mysterious and Pink Floyd-inspired. I find most of their work boring and pretentious, but I felt that was necessary as an introduction to the trilogy"-NNMaddox
