Since You've Been Mine

Well late last night it seems
you came to me in dreams
instead i misread words you said
racing in my head
the nights they aren't so black
but these images i lack
for i don't tell you fiction
i only tell you facts
the winters aren't so cold
and children don't grow old
later's always right on time
since you've been mine
the straw is spun to gold
i've yet to sell my soul
i sing in prose i speak in rhyme
since you've been mine
the weight's not on my shoulder
and sugar's always sweet
and all the things i've told her
are promises i keep
but every now and then
when i get insecure
i turn to you my friend
and i'm reassured
the straw is spun to gold
i've yet to sell my soul
i sing in prose i speak in rhyme
since you've been mine
the winters aren't so cold
and children don't grow old
later's always right on time
since you've been mine
the clouds have disappeared
it's crazy but it's true
subsiding all my fears
since i fell for you
but every now and then
when i get insecure
i turn to you my friend
and i'm reassured
and maybe i've lost all concept of selfish
foolish pride
or maybe i'm not bitter yet
since you've been mine
NNMaddox: "I hold this song very close to me, because it was one of the first that really captured the sound I was looking for. It's also about a specific person. I wanted to write a basic, simple love song. The inspiration comes from the Traveling Wilbury's song 'Handle With Care.' When I was living in Harlem, I went to see a screening of The Concert For George, a George Harrison tribute concert. I remember listening to the songs and thinking, 'Why can't I write songs like that?'.
Two versions of this song exist, one is quieter and recorded in Harlem. The one that appears on the album was recorded in Queens."
