Long Island Baby

The title track to Long Island Baby was written and recorded within 24 hours. It's the most honest track on the album. It tells the story of Maddox's only trip to Long Island, NY, and the people he encountered there. The music was chosen to provide a dreamlike feel, with the calm reminiscent vocal guiding the way.

Clearly a take on Lou Reed's "Coney Island Baby", Maddox lifts a line toward the end to give a heartfelt Valentine to his best friends, Steven and Nikki.

"What can I really say about this one? It's my favorite on the album. I always hated having an album named after a song. In this case though, I think the title fit the entire mood of the album. I did the vocals in one take, and I'm glad because I didn't want to lose the emotion of the song. Most of my songs are exaggerations of real events. In this case, it's pretty straightforward. It's about a person that is reliving a particularly memorable moment in his life, trying to recapture, but coming to the realization that it's in the past. It's not a lament though, because he's hopeful that it can happen again.

What I enjoy about this one, is that even the person telling the story is unaware that it's not the city or place he's in that he doesn't want to leave, but instead the intangible moment."-NNMaddox

you know, I never thought I’d get on an airplane when I was younger
I was way too scared.
I never did anything that was even a bit daring
I never made friends with anyone
I never went to any dances
I never rode a greyhound bus
I Never took any chances

But sometimes , man you gotta take life in your hand
and make it yours cuz no one can take that away.
So I head out to the big city one day
ooooh and the men on the streets ask if going dancing
in a mint green suit and pants and heading out to penn station
with a ticket in my hand and an elderly lady asks me,
a newcomer to the city, where the bus to
somewhere USA is, and no I dont know
but you better believe I’m not impolite
my mother taught me wrong from right
I didnt learn that in high school, no

And no, there aint no place like home
But sometimes it can leave you guessing
and if you dont ever leave y our home
you never know what you’re missing

And I see the signs passing by
of all the towns I’ll never see again
And I start thinking about Bellmore
and Freeport
and Massapequa Park and Seaford
And Prairieville is light years away
So it gives me more reason to stay
And I dont wanna go home
no I dont wanna go home
I’ve got a plane to catch tomorrow morning
A thousand miles away
But I dont wanna go home

and oh it was a hot august day
almost as hot as it was in louisiana
and I burning up on the inside and the outside
oh, and I wanted it that moment to last forever
But forever couldnt be long enough
and I didn’t wanna go back to airline and highland
daily life can be so rough
When you don’t wanna leave long island
No I dont want to go home
Dont wanna go home
I have a plane to catch in the morning
a thousand miles away
But I dont wanna leave, I dont wanna leave long island
Maybe someday
I’ll see the beach again
Maybe someday
I’ll walk those streets again
Maybe someday
I’ll see you smiling
and Maybe someday
I’ll come back to Long Island

And the rain is pouring down
The sky echoing the sound of turbulence
in an incandescent hue
It was there I saw you smiling
I remember Long Island
But most importantly, I remember you
And I dont wanna go home
I dont wanna go home
I have a plane to catch in the morning
A thousand miles away
But I dont wanna leave, dont wanna leave
I wanna stay here in long island
