Marriage/Divorce

Marriage is sacred to the Hmong. In either marriage, there is a distinctive or unique tradition behind it. Many Hmong, today, have adopted the “free will marriage,” in stead of the affianced marriage. However, if the husband is at fault in the break up, he shall lose all monetary goods, properties, and children to the wife. By traditional marriage break up laws, s/he shall pay a monetary apology to his or her family for not respecting the parents, elders, and marriage councils.
