Example 2

Duddy again rules out reason through his passion for land by using Virgil. Duddy uses Virgil for his abilities having no care toward Virgil's own well being. Duddy neglects the fact that Virgil is an epileptic and persuades him to carry out errands for Duddy.

"I'm a humanitarian. I took such a chance on a boy like that and this is the thank you I get." "Chance?" "Do you think he could have a fit while driving the truck?" "Why not?" "You mustn't let him do it, Duddy. You have to stop him." (Richler 253).

Virgil gets into an accident after having an attack leaving him paralyzed. The events that followed show how Duddy neglected his reason and was overcome by his passion.
