The Basics:What is Roleplaying? What is the WoD?

What is roleplaying?

Roleplaying is a type of game where a bunch of people gather around to imagine that they are other people. Using dice.

Seriously.

It's really fun, though.

What is the World of Darkness? What about Vampire? Mage? Werewolf?

The World of Darkness (WoD) is a fictional world created by
White Wolf, a company that publishes roleplaying games. A lot of the content on this site owes at least its inspiration from them.

In terms of roleplaying, the WoD is similar to the world we live in, except the shadows are longer, the forests are smaller, and everything else is just that much more bleak. It's a world where the single mother never gets relief from her work day, where serial killers almost always get off on technicalities, and where creatures live off of the blood of others. Magic is real, and so are werewolves, not to mention the dreams and nightmares we so rarely dare to remember. Get the picture?

Vampires, mages, and Werewolves are among the supernatural creatures that lurk in the shadows. Vampires are similar to those that we know of from myths and movies (although not quite). They live during the night, drinking blood from their victims, while scheming against each other. Werewolves are shapeshifters, chosen as Gaia's last guardians against the destruction of the natural world. Mages are wizards of the modern age, using their own strength of will to change the world around them. If you have more questions, feel free to ask a mod.

What are STs mods, admins?

An ST or Storyteller is someone who creates the world for you, the player. They control your enemies, but also your friends, too. Their job is to make your gaming experience as fun, challenging, and exciting as possible. On HbN, just about anyone can be an ST at anytime, however not all STs are created equal. To decide on rules, to settle conflicts, and to make sure that all things run smoothly, there are mods and admins.

Admins, short for administrators, are those who are in charge of this site. There is at least one admin for each section (Mage, Vampire, Werewolf, and Mortals), and each of them have the power to decide the specific rules for each section. Right now, the actual hierarchy of the admins (and whether there will be one over-riding admin) has yet to be decided, however in any conflicts between players, or between players and mods, the admin will have the last word. Other jobs admins will have include character approvals, running scenes and storylines, and managing character advancement and XP.

Mods, also called moderators, are appointed by admins to run individual scenes, small-scale storylines, and to settle conflicts when an admin is absent. If an admin is like a sheriff, then the mods are the deputies. The actual roles of each mod will depend on the admin, the system they're working in, etc., but mods will at least have a working knowledge of the site, as well as extensive knowledge in the system for which they work.

Mods and Admins will always be ready to answer any questions you have.

What do I need to play?

Technically, the only thing you need to play is an imagination. Oh, and a computer with internet access. But I bet you knew that already.

Less technically, there are a few things that will make your time on HbN much more enjoyable:
White Wolf books - The basic rule books for the system(s) you play in will help you understand the rules and the setting of the WoD. Also, you'll find that they can be fun to read.
Paper and pencils/pens or some program that works like paper and pens - for keeping notes, writing down your character stats, saving scenes, etc.
Ten-sided dice - Not everything that happens in the WoD is planned - dice help simulate random events. Having your own set may help to speed up complicated scenes.

A few really great things that you can do are to read anything and everything, and to get outside once in a while and see what's going on in the world around you. Lots of Storylines have been created because of a line from a book, or because of something someone saw in their own backyard.

The World of Darkness in Halifax

What about White Wolf's big announcement? Isn't the World of Darkness over?

Some of you may have heard that White Wolf is ending the World of Darkness. The Apocalypse, they say, is "now." And that's fine for anyone that wants to follow their specific storylines. But as with all WW products, there's no reason why we need to follow everything they say. The WoD thrives in part because of the creative drive that leads some people to use some rules, stories, and ideas and discard others. There's a good chance that the Apocalypse (Ascension, etc) will come to Halifax, but when that will be, no one knows...

On a different note, this gives players in the World of Darkness a lot of freedom. There won't be any new rules to trample over the ideas you've had. At this point anything could happen: The Umbra could explode into the world, the technocracy could take over everything, or the Sabbat could take up Scrabble, and leave us all alone. Think of the possibilities!
