Piracy in the Roman World

The rate of piracy has been high lately in rome. It is now constant threat to travel by see to trade because of pirates looking for goods to sell. Sailors that are caught by pirates are sold on the slave trade. Many pirates attack towns on the water because they can capture men women and children to sell or put up for ransom in the slave trade. Cicero in 66 b.c had figured the troubles of pirates in the past and claimed that the sea is virtually closed to all alies. The seas roman fleet had been taken over, the ambassador was paid a ransom to be set free, and they took over every coastal city making the pirates one of the strongest, ever. Cicero reported this was all over after Pompey was givin his own fleet to rid the sea of pirates. Augustus has recently established a permenant fleet to govern the seas and rid pirates from it forever.
