Welcome to the HLEqA.
Equitation Q&A's Q: What exactly is Equitation? A: Equitation mainly horsemanship and concentrates on the rider instead of the horse. Q: What disciplines does Equitation cover? A: Equitation covers most disciplines including dressage, hunters, jumpers, english, western and many other disciplines. Q: What are Equitation classes judged on? A: Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s seat, hands, performance of horse and suitability of horse and rider. Over fence classes are judged on rider’s ability to maintain the correct position over fences. Classes also include judging on the control of the mount, use of aids, and the rider’s position. The correct position is the rider carrying themselves in good posture, with their shoulders back, eyes ahead, heels down, back of the heel directly under the hip, etc. Good equitation actually has many components and takes a lot of practice to appear natural and not stiff and "posed". A good equitation rider spends a lot of time riding without stirrups to remain tight in the saddle and not loose and floppy.
