the arrangement of parts in an artwork to create a sense of equilibrium. the weight, placement, and color of objects are all balanced in a work of art.

there are three different types of balance. symmetrical balance (identical designs on either side of an axis or mirror), approximate symmetry (symmetrical balance varied slightly to hold viewers' attention), and asymmetrical balance (a felt equilibrium between contrasting parts of a design). asymmetrical balance is the most intuitive balance and therefore the most difficult to understand.
