Personal Risk Management Principles Introduction

CLICK HERE FOR A SHORT QUIZ

This is a one semester course focusing on the fundamentals of personal insurance and risk management. It is designed for those individuals who would like to develop an understanding of risk management techniques and become more informed consumers of personal and governmental insurance programs. The student will learn how to identify personal property and liability loss exposures and how to apply personal risk management techniques to the identified exposures. The learner will be expected to utilize and demonstrate the workplace skills of communication and critical inquiry as the foundation of their course of study.

Communication

The successful student will be able to understand and communicate in writing concise, complete and accurate information regarding the personal property and liability principles discussed in this course.

Critical Inquiry

The successful student will be able to discern and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various personal risk management techniques. The student will be asked to reflect on what they read; to identify and analyze key concepts, synthesize ideas from multiple sources, evaluate the significance of those ideas and to apply what is learned to their work and life situations. The risk management techniques discussed in this course will include avoidance, loss control, risk retention, non-insurance transfer and personal insurance.

Key Concepts

This will be the first experience with an online course for most of my students. The concepts learned in the course can be applied to individual and family situations. To encourage participation and to foster understanding and application of the various concepts explored in this course, students will be asked to complete weekly readings, multiple choice quizzes, and short surveys. Students will also be asked to participate in the discussion of weekly topics in an asynchronous environment.

While online classes have many advantages to the learner, online learning is not easier than traditional education. Just as there is a difference between hearing what is said and listening for meaning, there is a difference between reading words and comprehending meaning. Both listening and comprehending are active processes. Students will be encouraged to plan how they will study, to establish a routine to manage their time, to set positive and realistic goals as to how much they will accomplish each study session, and to reflect on new concepts as they are encountered.
