Jimi Hendrix will always be rembered for his innovative electric sound, his original style and his pure energy performance. Twenty five years after his death, the influence of his music is stronger than ever. His place in the history of the development of contemporary popular music is secure. Photoartist Nona Hatay has done one of the most extensive and involved visual interpretations of the of the Hendrix sound and philosophy. On assignment as a newspaper photographer in 1969, she covered the May 18th concert at New York's Madison Square Garden - one of the great musical performances of Hendrix's amazing three year career. in 1975, inspired by the spiritual electricity of Hendrix's music and the poetic intensity of his lyrics, Hatay began to experiment in black and white photography. Dissatisfied with the static quality of the still photographs, she expanded the concert pictures by combining them with other negatives from her vast collection. This captures Hendrix's musical energy in impressionistic visuals-stretching the limits of photography in much the same way that Hendrix broke through the boundries of rock and blues Most of the creations are one of a kind, printed while the powerful sounds of Hendrix's multi-dimensional music filled the darkroom with inspiration. Having worked in black and white through the 1970's Hatay started experimenting with color in the 1980"s, created a series of hand painted, one of a kind photo/artworks. Using the concert originals and their experimental off-shoots as canvases, she toned and colored them using oil, watercolor paints, colored inks and crayons. Having had major exhibits in Paris and London, in 1990, Hatay made a career change into healthcare and alternative healing, thinking that she would not create any new Hendrix pieces. Much to her surprise, she was inspired by the new computer technologies and has started creating her 1990s series. Hendrix Techno Art. "It is amazing to me that I have been so inspired from the one concert I photographed to create the many original pieces in my collection. On several occasions I have really thought I had finished the series but now I realize it is an ongoing project joining the music, the pictures and the colors. I still have many ideas to explore which is exciting." "The Spirit Lives On......"
