THE QUESTION: which character is the most disillusioned?
Gatsby

Gatsby is the most disillusioned character in the novel. He have faith in the idea that Daisy still full-heartedly loves him in return, and that everything can be the way it used to be- ‘just as if it were five years ago.’ (116) He wants her to abandon her life with Tom so they can move to Louisville and walk down the aisle together as they had planned when they were youthful.

Throughout the novel, Gatsby throws extravagant get-togethers - giving away illegal alcohol and inviting important people - all in hopes that Daisy would attend at least one of the parties. When she finally does come, she does not find it as amusing as Gatsby hopes - disappointing Gatsby sincerely.

Gatsby’s only wish and delusion is to be with Daisy and make her happy. He dreams about her and is constantly reminded of her by little things like the green light at the end of her dock. This has been his only wish ever since he first fell in love with her. She is married to Tom Buchanan, but this doesn’t seem to be a problem for Gatsby, which maybe it should be.

‘ I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before, ’ he said, nodding determinedly.
‘ She’ll see. ’
(Gatsby 117)
Tom

Tom is the most disillusioned character in The Great Gatsby . Tom thinks it is perfectly all right for him to cheat on Daisy by going out with Myrtle. He openly tells people he is with her even though they are both married. In his opinion he is free to do whatever he wants. The odd part about is idea is that he alone is aloud to cheat. When he finds out Daisy and Gatsby have something going on, he goes ballistic yelling, screaming, and making sure they understand how immoral they are being. He is furious at Gatsby for trying to steal his wife while all along he is doing the same thing to George Wilson. This is why Tom is the most disillusioned character in The Great Gatsby.
