Effects of the First Crusade

One of the effects of the First Crusade was the foundation of Crusader States. These were the areas of Edessa, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Tripoli. This expand the reach of the Pope and Christianity in the Near East. The First Crusade also would be one of many crusades to come. As the crusades went on the targets of them changed as well. While the first three crusades mainly applied to defending the Holy Land from Muslims, the forth changed everything. The Forth Crusades was an attack on Byzantium and that began the attack on other Christian groups who were seen as dangerous. This would also lead to the formation of Knight orders such as the Templars and events like the Inquisition.
