Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart was Achebe's first novel. Published in 1958, it is the story of Okonkwo, a respected Ibo clansman. Set at the turn of the century, Okonkwo struggles with what it means to be a man in his Ibo culture. As British colonialism and Christianity encroach on his village, Okonkwo is unable to adjust to the ways of the foreigners and finds himself pitted against some of his own friends and villagers. Over eight million copies of Things Fall Apart have been published worldwide. It has been translated into fifty languages and was adapted for the stage in Lagos, Nigeria, and for television in 1985 by the Nigerian Television Authority. In 1959, he was awarded the Margaret Wrong Memorial Prize for Things Fall Apart.
