Alternate Starship Selection System for Mothballed and or Refitted, Shattered Imperium Vessels


Do you have a campaign where you'd like one ship for the group but the players all want something different or the you'd like to keep bookkeeping down to a minimum?

One of the better systems developed was TNE's Ship Selection System. If it fits your campaign we'd recommend it, although it is Reformation Coalition/Regency specific.  Our effort is to suggest alternatives using the wealth of ships on the net and in other systems.  With that in mind we recommend reading Traveller: TNE. 

We also have an age problem. No existing system takes ships older than 40 years into account, and there is no discussion of refitting or restoring a mothballed ship. The concept of a maximum 40 year ship life is limiting.  We use refits to extend ship life.

Ship Selection Process

    Walk through the process and then the example below.

1. Allow Ship Markers during character generation and add them all up,

2. We roll on the ownership table. (We used the Traveller: TNE table -you may create your own or use their table)

I use the Value Modifier (VM) to determine age of ship (wear value), and remainder of mortgage (-1 VM =5yrs). The players can have a newer ship by selling shares to the Commonwealth Stellar Bank, or  by surrounding age for additional ownership.

Example:

Rolling on the Ownership/Age Chart (roll);
1. Determined the vessels operational age 75 years (2d6 rolled a 9) +6SM on chart this is -15.
Take chart value by 5yrs for actual age.
2. Max operational age between refits is 40. 75 minus 40 is 35.
3. So the Operational Age is 35 and it will require a refit 7 game year from now at 20% of cost new.
4. Divide remainder 35 by 5yr = 7 yrs of payments remaining.
She was refit in 1177 after her first 40 years in operation. That would mean she was layed down in 1137 but that's not possible...(IMTU the following historical facts must be considered)

5. How long was it mothballed prior to the 1116 collapse- (1-100) 73 years. She was mothballed in 1043 after 40 years of service. The keel was layed in 1003.
6. The actual age is 209 yrs.

Now, I roll on the ship table (Frank is ranking officer and his last career chooses table, Mercenary);
1. I rolled 2d6 9 +6SM= 15. 15 on the mercenary ship table is the armed liner. There are no subtables for this item. The vessel is a 600t armed liner, vigilante class.

That's nice it turned out to be one of my favorites:
This lady is 209 years old, ouch. She was commissioned as a standard, subsidized liner (Armed Liners were all refits/laid down starting in 1117). After 40 years they mothballed her for 134 years. Probably required a complete refit. In 1177, she was completely rebuilt/refit as an armed liner by the Commonwealth, they  replaced 20% of her, since they changed her function. Well at least she wasn't a Regency "quick and dirty" refit, or a Virus capture.

There are no canon rules on what happens to a mothballed, or 40+ year vessel. Generally, they're scrapped and de-commissioned but if we can revive old battleships in the 20th century, so can the world of Traveller. There are some comments about mothballed vessels being pressed back into service but no rules, so I created my own rules.

On the scout table it would've been a survey vessel, merchant: unarmed subliner, yacht table: a yacht, lab table: survey ship, warship table: armed liner.... So this is the largest of the alternatives but provides good defense against 1-2 vargr corsairs. But not as effective as a cruiser...or stealthy as some scouts.
