The Atlantic Ocean is one of the largest oceans in the world. Its area is about 31,831,000 square miles. The Atlantic extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to Antarctica in the south. The Atlantic is separated into two parts; the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic. The Atlantic Ocean is the body of water that extends from the Americas on the eastern side to Europe and Africa on the western side. The floor is mostly volcanic mountain range in one section, mud and clay on the other. The deepest point in the Atlantic is 27,498 feet deep in the Puerto Rico Trench. The weather in the North Atlantic consists of some storms, winds, hurricanes, and heat from May to December, but mostly these are found from August to November. There are many different kinds of organisms in the Atlantic Ocean. The many from Animalia include tube worms, crinoids, flounder, shrimp, oysters, octopuses, crabs, eels, jellyfish, and differing types of sponges. Irish moss and Sea lettuce are protists. There are three main invertebrate phyla in the Atlantic. They are Mollusca, which is marked by a soft body that is usually covered by a hard shell, and a muscular foot, Annelida, which have bodies composed of segments and a closed circulatory system, and Arthropoda, which have an exoskeleton, joint appendages, and a segmented body. Oysters (Ostrea edulis) are mollusks, tube worms are annelids, and shrimp (Cargo septemspinosos) are arthropods. The two main vertebrate classes are Osteichthyes, which are characterized by a bony exoskeleton, and are aquatic, and Reptilia, which have scale-covered skin, three chambered hearts, and are adapted to both the land and water. Class Osteichthyes contains flounder (Platichthys flesis), and crocodiles belong to Class Reptilia. There are two organisms that we picked out to represent adaptation. Sea Weed is a protist. It floats on the top of the water. It is also a source of food for microscopic organisms. The sea weed is part of the ocean floor, that eventually breaks off to become what you see moving around on the surface. Oysters are animals. The oyster covers itself with a hard shell for protection because it gets thrown around in the water. Also, in case of oncoming predators, they can snap their shell shut, bury themselves under the sand, and spit out water. There are many endangered species in the Atlantic Ocean, but one is very important. The Humpback whale is going extinct. It is dying out because of illegal fishermen that kill them for sport. They are also dying because they are losing their habitat because of pollution. We need to protect the whales because they are a beautiful part of nature. An example of symbiosis in the Atlantic Ocean is Coral. Coral is located in the South Atlantic, and is housing for tiny protists like algae. The algae secrete materials that help build and maintain the coral structure. They also photosynthesize, providing nutrition for the coral. Coral is sometimes very old and dies easily. It looks like a colorful rock, but it is alive and helps out other organisms that need protection. Coral is a perfect example of symbiosis. The Atlantic Ocean is very large, and is an environment for many different types of organisms
