Nova Scotia's Coat of Arms. It is the oldest coat of arms in the Commonwealth countries.

Nova Scotia's official tartan, designed in 1953 and made official in 1955, was the first official provincial tartan in Canada. The colours in the tartan represent different aspects of the province: blue and white represent the sea, green representing the forests, red for the Royal Lion on the coat of arms, and gold represents the province's historic Royal Charter.

The original Bluenose schooner was built in 1921 and was the pronvince's premier racing vessel until 1946. The Bluenose II is Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador and is pictured on the back of the dime.

The Shield of Arms represents a unique union of the Royal and National Arms of Scotland. Granted in 1625, it includes a blue cross - the cross of Saint Andrew from the National Arms, but with the colours reversed - on a white or silver background. In the centre is the royal lion inside a double red border, on a yellow or gold background.

The Mayflower (also known as Trailing Arbutus (Epigaea repens) became the province's official flower in 1901.
