Girls Rock at Sports!
CHANGE SOMETHING!
- GIRLS KICK A** AT SPORTS! SO WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO TAKE FUNDING AWAY FROM GIRLS' TEAMS? Can you imagine your high school or college without women's sports? Well, some politicians can: They're trying to limit women's athletics.
- THE HISTORY: In 1972 Congress passed Title IX, a law that bans gender discrimination in schools, including on sports teams. Title IX started a sea change for high school athletics: There are now 2.8 million females playing-- almost 10 times more than in 1971.
- HOW IT WORKS: Under Title IX, schools must meet the needs of their female athletes
- THE PROBLEM: Title IX is in serious risk of being trashed. Why? Some men's-sports advocates have complained that it discriminates agaisnt men. A government advisory commission recently nixed a proposal to completely overhaul the law (good news)-- but endorsed allowing the Department of Education to tinker with it (bad news).
- BOTTOM LINE: Altering Title IX could mean less support for female sports (very bad news).
- WHAT YOU CAN DO: Tell U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige that Title IX in important to you, and that gender discrimination is wrong. E-mail him at Rod.Paige@ed.gov or send a fax to 202-401-0596.
