Kiwanis Annual Meeting Minutes 10/4/2004 President Ev Spear III called his last meeting to order at 6:25pm. John Rapose led the Pledge of Allegiance, and George Dawson offered our invocation. Our many guests tonight included: Rona Spear, Deb Poulin, Bill Dagley, Marjorie Kinney, Roberta Dawson, Eric and Crystal Witham from the Pittsfield club, Stan Hansen, Janet Page, Josephine Rapose, EJ Sulivan’s friend Paula Cook, Janet Vrolijk, Kerrie Catalano, and Darren Payson. Jane ‘Dual Dessert’ Dagley expressed dissatisfaction that dessert was not already on the tables, and assured the club that such would not happen under her term as club president. President Spear thanked Mark Curtis and the events committee for their work in planning tonight’s banquet. We gave the Pittsfield contingency back their bell—even though they didn’t have a full Interclub. Committee Reports Interclubs: There is an Interclub planned for Thursday the 7th to the Augusta club, but more people are needed to go. Friday the 8th is the official Governor’s Visit at the Black Bear Inn in Orono, and three people are planning on going to that. Haunted House: The walls are mostly up, but decorators are needed. Also, actors are needed. The house opens in NINE DAYS! Priority 1: The committee had a joint effort with some local Rotary clubs, and gathered 87 cases of baby formula to give to hurricane ravaged Florida residents. Knowlton Moving is shipping the formula at no charge. The local clubs raised almost $3500 in about 48 hours for this hurry-up-and-let’s-do-it project. President Ev Spear gave some opening remarks, noting what accomplishments the club had made over the year, and also noting that he was part of four father-son teams who had served as club presidents. Lt. Governor Sumner Kinney inducted new board members Barbara Hansen, Keith Wass, and Pam Feyler, and uninstalled Lynn Taylor and Gordon Page. Sumner also installed Jane Dagley as vice-president, Betty Anne Tucker as Secretary, and Carol Kelly as president-elect. He also said a few words to outgoing president Ev Spear. Carol Kelly introduced Steve Poulin, and Sumner Kinney installed him as our new President. Steve gave us some goals for this year, based on his IDEAS plan: I-mprove club meetings and speakers D-evelop our presence in the community, and add a Key Club E-ngage current members to become more involved A-ttain membership growth to a net of five new members S-trenghten our existing projects Gordon Page gave presentations with the awards committee, our President, and our Immediate Past President. We gave $1000 to Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, and in so doing upgraded the crest of Sumner Kinney’s red jacket. (Another award based on a gift to KPTI is outstanding, as the member to be honored was not in attendance.) We gave $1000 to the Kiwanis International Foundation, and presented a Hixon award to Ev Spear III. (Another award based on a gift to KIF is outstanding, as the member to be honored was not in attendance.) The "Kiwanian of the Year" award isn’t given every year, but this year there were many who were considered. The award was given to Keith Wass. Happy/Sads: Steve Poulin gave a sad dollar for referring to Gordon as "Mr. Page." John Batty was happy for Keith Wass, for Barbara Hersey pulling of the baby formula project, and for his wife Brenda. Sumner Kinney was happy for the upgrade of his jacket, happy his wife was with us, and happy for the new club officers. Gordon Page was happy for Sumner’s induction skills, happy for the award winners, happy for the new club year, happy for Betty Anne Tucker, and happy for Ev’s year. Brenda Batty was happy for the new officers and board members, happy for Ev’s year, happy to be a member, and sad she can’t find a tailor who can shorten the red jacket she received last year. Pam Feyler was happy for Ev’s year, happy for her sponsor Gordon Page, happy for the award winners, and happy that Pete Cella was now the president of the Lobster Festival. Jane Dagley was happy for her sponsor Barbara Hansen, happy that Gordon Page and Brenda Batty urged her to be on the membership committee, happy for Don Kanicki who asked her to be an officer for many years before she finally agreed, happy for her husband Bill, happy for Ev III, and hoping that Betty Anne Tucker will stay on long enough to be her secretary. Carol Kelley was happy for Brenda Batty who invited her, and she was happy for a bunch of other things, but she went so fast I couldn’t write them down. Gordon Page was sad he and Janet can’t park cars this Sunday as they had planned, and begged for someone to bail him out. Ev Spear was happy for his Hixon, happy for the incoming officers, happy the year is over, and happy for his wife. Pete Cella was happy for a good, non-fast-food meal, and happy that 12 non-kiwanians were volutneering at the haunted house the other night. Joe Catalano was happy for Keith Wass. Barbara Hansen was happy for the award winners, happy for the officers, and happy to have been one of the first five members inducted to the club. Keith Wass was happy to be Kiwanian of the Year, happy for the new officers, and happy for Joe Catalano. Joe and Keith were so happy for each other, in fact, they had to hug each other. John Rapose was happy for Ev’s year, happy that our club allows women, happy for Steve Poulin and his new year, and happy to have been a member for 47 years.
