Buy A Pixel

I'm pretty sure you've all heard of the "buy a pixel" advertising websites. If you haven't, they're basically webpages that have a grid of 10x10 pixel boxes, going 100 boxes wide and 100 boxes high, making up 10,000 boxes. Now what they do is sell these boxes to advertisers for $1 per pixel, which comes to $100 per box (10 pixels high x 10 pixels wide, or about the size of the space between these two lines... | |).

Here's an example of what these pages look like:

I thought this was a great idea, since it's never been done before, and it even made me want to buy in when I read one of the testimonial pages. The problem is I wasn't willing to fork over $100 for just one tiny 10x10 pixel box. I felt I would just get lost in the crowd, so I thought that I'd have to get a bigger space. Hmmm... as I gazed over the page, I noticed that the ads that were 4x4 or larger grabbed my attention pretty well. Let's see how much that would cost, just to give it a shot and hope and pray it's worth it...

Let's see, $1 per pixel... 40 pixels wide... 40 pixels high... 40x40= $1,600!!! Holy moly! Do you think it would be a good idea to spend $1,600 for something I just wanted to give a shot and hope and pray it's worth it? Not me... so I didn't do it.

About a month went by, and I noticed someone talking about one of these webpages in a forum I visit. As I read down the page, I saw that many people were wishing they'd have thought of the idea, and it seemed to be the "talk of the town". I decided to do some research on a couple of these sites and noticed that one of them, only online since August of 2005, has an Alexa.com rank of 8,904, and has tens of thousands of sites linking to it, which is absolutely amazing!

Adding together the huge success of these types of sites, and the idea that many people don't want to spend $100 for every "| |" sized ad, I decided to make a site similar to these others selling a "| |" for $100, but instead of charging $1 per pixel, I'll just charge $1 per square... this way, you can buy a decent sized 40x40 pixel square for just $16, as opposed to $1,600.

As of todays date, 9/30/05, I don't know of any other site that gives this opportunity to those that can't afford to spend $1,600 on "cheap" advertising. Wish the site well, and I'll keep you all updated on it's progress.
