Plant World of the Philippines

The dictionary is an illustrated dictionary of Visayan plant names with their scientific (Latin taxonomic) names, Tagalog and English equivalences (the first plant dictionary in Visayan language).

It presents a documentation of data on natural plant resources such as native medicinal plants, plants for handicrafts, timber trees, etc. The book also reports of exquisite trees that have become very rare due to over-exploitation. And it intends to motivate people to care for plants – and protect rare species. The ethnobotanical interviews were conducted with most knowledgeable people such as herbolarios and midwifes (medicinal plants, ghost beliefs, other uses in the community).

The book is made up of four parts:
  • Part One: The Visayan plant dictionary. This part is the Visayan plant dictionary with updated scientific nomenclature, synonyms, plant descriptions and names in Tagalog and foreign languages. This part contains 2354 Visayan plant names. The scientific nomenclature was updated. Latin synonyms mostly used in Philippine botany were added in brackets.
  • Part Two: Latin plant names (all Latin names that occur in Part One).
  • Part Three: Tagalog plant names (all Tagalog names that occur in Part One).
  • Part Four: English plant names (all English names mentioned in Part One).
