BARRACKS:
DARK AGE: THE BARRACKS MILITARY BUILDING IS THE FIRST ONE ALLOWED TO HAVE STARTING IN DARK AGE. MOST TIMES YOU WILL NOT NEED TO USE ANY UNITS FROM HERE WHILE IN DARK AGE, VILLIES ARE ALMOST AS STRONG AND VILLIES ARE CHEAPER.
FEUDAL AGE: YOU MUST BUILD A BARRACKS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO BUILD AN ARCHERY RANGE AND/OR STABLE IN FEUDAL AGE. YOU CAN GET MAN-AT-ARMS ( UPGRADED MILITIA ) OR SPEARMAN FROM HERE IN FEUDAL. I DON'T ADVISE BUILDING AND ARMY IN FEUDAL UNLESS YOU PLAN ON FLUSHING OR ARE GETTING FLUSHED. MAN-AT-ARMS ARE STRONG VS SPEARMAN BUT WEAK VS SCOUT CALVARY AND ARCHERS. SPEARMAN AND STRONG VS SCOUT CALVARY AND WEAK VS MAN-AT-ARMS AND ARCHERS. SPEARMAN ARE WEAK VS VILLIES UNLESS YOU HAVE A LARGE ( 9 OR MORE ) NUMBER OF THEM.
CASTLE AGE: IN THIS AGE YOU CAN UPGRADE BOTH MAN-AT-ARMS AND SPEARMAN TO LONGSWORDSMAN AND PIKEMAN. WITH A BLACKSMITH'S SHOP, YOU CAN INCREASE THEIR ATTACK AND ARMOR. BUILD THIS ATTACK AND ARMOR EVENLY STARTING WITH ARMOR THEN ADD ATTACK ( +1 EACH ). ALSO, WITH MAYAN AND AZTEC CIVS, THE EAGLE WARRIOR IS THE QUICKEST MOVING INFANTRY UNIT. REMEMBER CASTLE AGE IS WHERE YOU WILL "BOOM" YOUR ECONOMY AND LIKELY DO SOME FIGHTING. TOO MUCH MILITARY WILL HURT YOUR "BOOM" AND NOT ENOUGH WILL COST YOU THE GAME. I NORMALLY START OFF WITH PIKEMAN BECAUSE MOST RUSHES BEGIN WITH KNIGHTS AND PIKEMAN ARE STRONG VS KNIGHTS. SPEARMAN ARE STRONG VS KNIGHTS BUT NOT NEARLY AS SCARY TO THE RUSHER AS PIKEMAN ARE. MOST TIMES THE RUSH WILL BE NEAR YOUR GOLD, WOOD, AND STONE GATHERING PLACES. PLACING A FEW PIKEMAN ( 3 OR 4 ) AT THESE KEY LOCATIONS MAY THWART A RUSH. THE STRONGER THE KNIGHTS ARE THE STRONGER YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR PIKEMAN ( ARMOR FIRST ). IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO RESEARCH SQUIRES, DO SO; IT WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER CHANCE OF CATCHING AND KILLING KNIGHTS. DO NOT USE PIKEMAN VS LONGSWORDSMAN, ANY CASTLE INFANTRY/RANGE UNIT, SCORPIONS, OR ANY ARCHERY RANGE UNITS UNLESS YOU HAVE A 2.3x1 RATIO OF PIKEMAN. AGAIN SQUIRES ARE VERY USEFUL WITH MASS PIKEMAN CHARGE VS RANGE UNITS. LONGSWORDSMAN ARE STRONG VS PIKEMAN AND BUILDINGS. ADDING A FEW OF THESE WITH YOU PIKEMAN ARMY WILL HELP GREATLY! AT ANY POINT IN A RUSH THAT AN ENEMY CASTLE APPEARS, BACK UP!! DO NOT CHARGE THE CASTLE UNLESS YOU HAVE A 40+ ARMY. EVEN THEN WHILE YOUR ARE DESTROYING THE CASTLE THE ENEMY WILL PROBALLY BE KILLING YOUR UNITS WITH HIS ARMY. ULTIMATLY, NOT A GOOD IDEA TO RUSH A CASTLE. REMEMBER, TEUTONS GET FREE MURDERHOLES WITH CASTLE AGE. BACK YOUR ARMY UP AND MAKE A FEW RAMS ( 3 TO 5 ) I WILL TALK ABOUT THEM A LITTLE LATER THOUGH. *HINT*- IF YOU HAVE A CASTLE NEAR, TRY AND LURE THE ENEMY UNITS WITHIN RANGE OF IT, DOING SO WILL GIVE YOU A 67% CHANCE OF KILLING UP LOTS OF ENEMY UNITS. WARNING!! DO NOT CHARGE INTO A AZTEC MONK RUSH UNLESS YOU HAVE A 40+ ARMY AS WELL!!
IMPERIAL AGE: AHHHH YEAH!! FINALLY MADE IT TO IMPERIAL AGE!! LET'S HOPE THAT YOU BEAT YOUR ENEMY THERE, IF SO, YOU CAN TURN THE TIDE OF THE WAR AND GAME QUICKLY NOW. BY NOW YOU SHOULD BE 75% FINISHED WITH YOUR BOOM AND ANY BARRACKS UNITS SHOULD BE +2 ARMOR AND ATTACK. LETS GO AHEAD AND UPGRADE THOSE PIKEMAN TO HALBERDIER. NOW THEY ARE VERY STRONG VS MOUNTED UNITS AND YOU DON'T NEED ANY GOLD TO CREATE THEM. A MASSIVE ARMY OF THESE HALBERDIER CAN BE DEVISTATING!! A 55 PIECE ARMY OF HALBERDIER +2 TREBS CAN REAK HAVOK ON YOU ENEMY. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, YOU WILL SEE HIM TRYING TO WALL OFF FOR DEFENCE, THOSE ARE THE VILLIES YOU NEED TO KILL FIRST, DON'T GIVE HIM/HER TIME TO RE-GROUP. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON HIM/HER. LOTS OF GAMES IF YOU OUT-IMP YOUR ENEMY, DROP THEIR CASTLE AND 1 TOWNCENTER, THEY WILL CAVE IN AND LOSE ALL BERING( MAYBE QUIT :)). AS YOU ARE PUSHING WITH YOUR HALBERDIER, RESEARCH TWO-HANDED SWORDSMAN. SEND IN SOME OF THESE WITH YOUR PUSH AND SEE IF YOU CAN DESTROY SOME HOUSES, GIVE HIM/HER POP LIMIT TROUBLE AND THEY CAN'T MAKE A ARMY. ( WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HUNS ). BY NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE A GOOD START ON THE ENEMY BASE, UPGRADE TO CHAMPIONS AND FINISH IT OFF, A MASSIVE FLOOD OF CHAMPIONS AND HALBERDIER CAN DESTROY MOST ANYTHING IN SIGHT ( EXCLUDING CROSS-FIRING BOMBARD TOWERS AND CASTLES ). CHAMPION VS CHAMPION BATTLES ARE OK WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AZTECS, THEIR POST-IMP CHAMPIONS HAVE 13+8 ATTACK AND WILL SLAUGHTER YOUR INFANTRY. ALSO, GOTHS IN IMPERIAL AGE CAN PRODUCE HUSKARLS AND HAVE MASSIVE PRODUCTION SPEED OF ALL BARRACKS UNITS IN POST-IMP.
