Job Description:- Land Surveyor

The purpose of a land surveyor’s job is to find and mark the boundary of one’s home or property. This is very important to people who just bought a house or are planning to sell one. Many real estate companies hire surveyors, to map out boundaries and measure the total are of the home owner’s property.

To measure and map one’s property, the surveyor must first go to the city or town hall, and search through property records to find out the where the property line extends to. There are maps, old and new that show exactly, to the nearest inch, where property lines meet. The surveyor  must then go back to the client’s property, and locate a certain point, which is usually made up of, a 3- foot stone dug into the ground. These stones were either installed by the city or a previous surveyor. From this point, the surveyor can locate other points by using hi-tech machines, that use a system similar to GPS (global positioning system) where the instrument sends out a signal to a satellite that shoots it back and gives the surveyor his exact position the nearest inch. From there the surveyor can plot the land according to the city plans. The surveyor then pots stakes into the ground to mark the boundary, or the 3-foot deep stones, at the corners of the property.

Nature Of The Work-

The surveyor most of the time works outside on the site of the person’s property, or in the governmental buildings where city and town property plans are stored. The work day usually starts at around 9 AM, and ends when the surveyor feels that he’s done enough work, because the he gets paid for each job that he completes and so each project usually lasts a few days. Unless one is working for a firm, the surveyor is his own boss and decides when he starts, ends, and takes breaks, or vacations. It all depends on how much money he wants to get and how much he wants to work for it.

The social environment depends on who the surveyor works for. There needs to be at least another person working with the surveyor, and that’s the only person he has to deal with, other than the client himself. The surveyor spends most of his time outside making measurements or looking through city plans in city hall.

Qualifications-

To become a land surveyor, one needs a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. After obtaining the degree one can work for a firm, and get promoted as he continues to work there, and how well the surveyor does his job. To make more money one can start his own business, and be your own boss, and get paid more if your willing to work for it.

How much does this person make?

The entry level salary of a land surveyor is $ 30, 138

The average salary is $ 35,332

The typical maximum salary is around $ 42,108

Reflection-

I chose to investigate this career because I had the opportunity to work with a land surveyor and to learn what the job is all about and how it works, and the instruments that are used. I would consider going into this career because it looks interesting and it has to deal with engineering which I plan to study in college. I like the practicality of this career because I feel like I’m actually doing something, and it’s fun working with the instruments, and it’s a relaxed atmosphere. The one thing I don’t like about the job is that it sometimes gets boring and tedious measuring and plotting a huge boundary.

My other sources are all just first hand experience because I worked with a land surveyor and asked him many questions about his job, because I was interested. I worked with him for a week, every day, and got to know the working times and conditions, and have known the person himself personally, so I know when he takes vacations. I feel that a written interview with him is unnecessary, and I know enough information about his career.
