Metal Sconces

I got these copper thingies at a bead shop, but I'm sure a craft store like Michael's would have them. I've put them next to a 1" brick for an idea of scale - they're obviously too long!

The other two bits, btw, are for making post earrings - you glue a pearl or bead in the cup. But I figured I'd buy them for pewter serving plates - just cut the post off all but 1/16" and poke that into a wood (or plaster) table (see an example of a worktable here).

So the plan is to cut this down, flatten the back a bit, glue it on to something flat, and also paint it or brush it with something so it doesn't look so unrealistically CLEAN!!! We're talking accessories for a smoky dark castle, after all...

The metal thingy is made like a waffle cone - starts out flat and is rolled around something. So we take advantage of the seam and start cutting there with side cutters. Make another couple cuts all the same depth, then fold them out a bit and trim off.

At this point it's still a little long so I cut about 1/8" off the bottom, used a skewer to make the bottom round again as the side cutters kinda flattened it.

The next step isn't entirely necessary, but I cut some of the metal off the back bottom to make it flatten better, which I did by gently tapping on the front with the flat side of my side cutters.

I figured copper was at least an acceptable metal for the sconce to be made of (although it would probably have been more likely wrought iron) so I just brushed black over the sconce, allowing the raised design to show through.

I glued it to a small arch (I rushed this page, so you can still see the wet wood glue at the bottom), but you could use the big arch, the roofed arch from the Bell Tower mold, or just a plain flat tile.

Here I've tried to show what it would look like in a wall. Sometimes in a more architecturally interesting room I prefer to inset the thin tiles (left) but in a corridor it looks better flush with the wall.

The finished sconce, complete with candle!
