Christened "Peaceful Sea" by Ferdinand Magellan, the Pacific Ocean is anything but. The world's largest water body, it occupies a third of the Earth's surface, and is a true marvel of nature. This ocean includes over 25,000 islands, countless varieties of bioorganisms, and the Ring of Fire, a region of heavy seismic activity. The Pacific covers approximately 179.7 million km^2, and the lowest known point in the world, the Marianas Trench, also is a part of it.
