The Orb of Etheria
A Comprehensive Case Study

The Orb of Etheria is a coveted item, as it is so powerful. However, it is not easy to get, as one must conquer all 67 territories or provinces before being able to receive one. There are 5 types of Orbs, and they all fit into the ring slot of a Hero's inventory, as shown in the picture below. This article discusses the different types of Orbs, its power and how to obtain them.

The table below describes the different types of the Orb of Etheria.

Type Bonuses
The Bronze Orb of Etheria The Bronze Orb of Etheria +5 to any three skills, except Casting and Conversion.
The Silver Orb of Etheria The Silver Orb of Etheria +6 to any three skills, except Casting and Conversion.
The Gold Orb of Etheria The Gold Orb of Etheria +7 to any three skills, except Casting and Conversion.
The Ruby Orb of Etheria The Ruby Orb of Etheria +8 to any three skills, except Casting and Conversion.
The Godly Orb of Etheria The Godly Orb of Etheria +9 to any three skills, except Casting and Conversion.

As you can see, the Orb of Etheria, regardless of its type, adds to three skills except Casting and Conversion. However, the legal skills that the Orb of Etheria adds is according to the table below.

Bonuses Possible Skills
First Bonus Either Speed, Merchant or Magery
Second Bonus Either Combat, Health or Morale
Third Bonus Either Command, Resistance or Training

This means that finding an Orb of Etheria which adds to Magery, Health and Resistance is possible, but not an Orb of Etheria which adds to Speed, Combat and Health. Which skill bonus the Orb of Etheria would give you is randomly chosen. However, the type of Orb of Etheria you get on completion of the campaign is not random. It is based on two factors as shown in the second table.

Difficulty Easy Normal Hard Extreme
Mode
Normal The Bronze Orb of Etheria The Bronze Orb of Etheria The Silver Orb of Etheria The Gold Orb of Etheria
Tinman The Bronze Orb of Etheria The Silver Orb of Etheria The Gold Orb of Etheria The Ruby Orb of Etheria
Bronzeman The Silver Orb of Etheria The Gold Orb of Etheria The Ruby Orb of Etheria The Godly Orb of Etheria
Ironman The Gold Orb of Etheria The Ruby Orb of Etheria The Godly Orb of Etheria The Godly Orb of Etheria

As you can infer, the Orb which has the highest chance of obtaining is the Gold Orb of Etheria. However, it is not so.

Firstly, your hero Mode cannot be changed.

Secondly, the quality of the Orb of Etheria is determined from lowest difficulty you've ever played thoughout the Campaign. For example, your hero is in Bronzeman mode, and you've taken over 66 territories in Extreme difficulty with the last one in Easy difficulty. You would not get the Godly Orb of Etheria, but the Silver Orb of Etheria.

Thirdly, the difficulty for your hero is tagged to the lowest you've played (A bug?). This means that if you initially complete the Campaign in Extreme difficulty, and for the second time, 66 territories in Extreme and one in Easy, you will get a Godly Orb of Etheria for your first try, the Silver Orb of Etheria for your second, and for the third time, if you play all 67 territories in Extreme difficulty, you will still get the Silver Orb of Etheria. The difficulty is locked to the lowest difficulty you've played, so even if you still complete the Campaign for the fourth and fifth time in Extreme difficulty, you will still get the Silver Orb of Etheria. Better start with Extreme difficulty, and stick with it.

However, there are five factors that would not affect the quality of the Orb of Etheria you get. They are listed below.

If you change the difficulty in the Campaign from Extreme to Easy, and change it back to Extreme before starting your next battle, it would not change the type of Orb of Etheria you would get. As long as you don't start a Campaign battle before you switch the difficulty back, the type of Orb of Etheria you get would not be affected.

This brings us to the second point, Skirmish and Multiplayer battles would not affect your Campaign conquest for the Orb of Etheria at all. So if you change the difficulty of the Campaign from Extreme to Easy, play a Skirmish battle and change the difficulty back to Extreme before continuing the Campaign, the type of Orb of Etheria would remain the same.

The third point is that changing races during the Campaign will not affect the quality of the Orb of Etheria you would get on completion of the Campaign.

The next point is that gloating about your victory would not affect the kind of Orb of Etheria you would get. Furthermore, choosing to reset the Campaign would not either.

Last but not least, probably the most important, is that losing battles will not affect the kind of Orb of Etheria you would get on your conquest.

I have done extensive research on the Orb of Etheria for version 1.03 of Warlords Battlecry II, so the information should be correct. Perhaps in the next patch the bug(?) may be fixed.

A few important things to note before you start your merciless slaughter:

You cannot accept resignation or any armistice if you want to get the Orb of Etheria. You have to continue the protracted and bloody battle towards the end to be worthy of this item. All 67 territories must be taken forcefully. In layman's terms, kill them all.

Moveover, you should clear a slot for the Orb of Etheria before completing the Campaign. The game does not ask what item do you wish to discard to make space for the Orb of Etheria; it justs overwrite the item in the first slot in your inventory, be it a Set Item or not.

Finally, the movie about the Orb of Etheria spinning around does not mean that you are getting that type (the movie should be always about the Godly Orb of Etheria spinning around). You will have to start a battle and view your inventory to determine so.

That's all. Cheers!
