Gades get a wakeup call

Cancel the parade down Dundas Street and keep the champagne on ice, the Woodstock Renegades have work to do.

Friday's 6-2 loss to Simcoe illustrated what can happen when the legs stop moving and the bodies stop flying, even for one period.

Woodstock rebounded with another win over Aylmer Saturday night, but its first loss of the season proved to be a wakeup call.

"I think that one gave us a dose of reality," Renegades' head coach Dave McLaren said. "We did not play very well in our own zone, that's for sure. They (Simcoe) have a great transition game, and we were watching, not reacting."

Woodstock trailed 2-1 going into the third but lost control early when Simcoe forward Dan Ryan took advantage of a bad pinch at the Storm blue-line and raced the length of the ice to bury a shorthanded goal between the legs of Woodstock goalie Alex Gegeny.

Jordan Paton and Kirk Stevenson, two of Simcoe's hired guns, struck in the next four minutes to give the Storm a 5-1 lead.

It was the first crack in Gegeny's armour this year. The 18-year-old goalie was brilliant in his previous start against Norwich and was solid again during Saturday's 6-2 win in Aylmer.

"We just stopped working and stopped doing the little things right," he said. "The first two periods were good. The third I'd like to have a few back."

Gegeny was facing former goaltending partner Chris Lee, who joined Simcoe this summer. The two acknowledged each other with a tap on the pads after each period.

"He's a great guy and he helped me a lot last year," Gegeny said. "It's always fun to play against him."

Craig Thomson and Tyler Labadie scored for Woodstock against the Storm.

Stevenson had a pair for Simcoe, while Paton, Ryan, Corey Bethune and Tyler Norrie added singles.

Against the Spitfires, Woodstock forward Mike Brilhante had two goals and an assist. Travis Horvath, Jordan Minello, Craig Thomson and Travis Parkin added singles for the Renegades.

Cole Maher had three assists to increase his team-leading total to eight.

Mark Pfohl and Travis Schruder scored for Aylmer.
