Members of the Oxford County OPP and the Woodstock Police Service will to take to the ice against the Woodstock Navy Vets later this month in a charity game for the Hawkins Family Memorial Fund.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., the charity game will pit the police officers against Woodstock's Junior C club in a friendly game at the Southwood Arena that will support a very worthy cause.

During the game, the Ingersoll block parents will be offering free fingerprinting for child safety while

Woodstock firefighters and Oxford County's Crimestoppers will be hosting displays.

In December 2008, local police and the Oxford community were stunned by the loss of OPP Const. Laurie Hawkins, her husband Richard and their two children, Cassandra and Jordan. The Hawkins family was killed at home by carbon monoxide poisoning after an exhaust pipe on a gas fireplace became blocked.

A colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, carbon monoxide, if inhaled, inhibits the blood's ability to absorb and transport oxygen through the body. Because of this oxygen deprivation, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause severe damage to the body's vital organs. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning range from nausea and headaches from a mild exposure to severe vomiting and unconsciousness at a high exposure.

In the wake of the tragedy, friends and co-workers came together and created the Hawkins Family Memorial Fund, which funds bursaries in the family's memory and provides financial assistance to local youth involved in sports.

The OPP and Oxford OPP are inviting everyone in the community to come out with their families to this fun hockey game. The admission to the charity game is by goodwill donation.
