2010-11 NAVY VETS SEASON REVIEW

The Navy Vets were resurrected for the 2010-11 season after playing as the Renegades for the past 3 seasons.

They introduced a completely new management team and coaching staff, led by new GM/Head Coach Jeff Morrison,

who took over from Bill McLeod who had run the team as the Renegades for the past 3 seasons.

The Vets started the 2010-11 season rebuilding the roster with 12 young and inexperienced (at the junior level) players,

by promoting 7 players from the WMHA Midgets and signing 5 other players who played Midget last season in other cities.

Only 5 players were returning from 2009-10 Renegades, including newly named captain Devon Young & Andy Fallowfield on defence and forward Travis Horvath,

all entering their 3rd full season with the team.

The team struggled from the start with only 2 wins in their 1st 20 games, including losing their 1st 8 games.

But the team showed improvement with each game they played ...

and finally won their 1st home game of the season 5-3 over Caledonia in late November, which started a streak of 3 wins in 4 games.

They won 2 of their next 5 to close out 2010.

Derek Cowing (who was unable to attend), Chase Thornton & Brynn Schultz were named Navy Vets representatives for the annual AllStar Game on Jan 08 in Chippawa.

The team then went into a tailspin and lost their last 8 games of the regular season to miss a chance to overtake Paris and wound up finishing in last place with a 7-25-4 record.

They drew rival Norwich Merchants, who had dominated the division with a 32-2-2 record and had beaten the Vets in all 6 meetings, in the playoffs 1st round series.

The Vets were overmatched and were swept in 4 straight games.

Rookie forward Derek Cowing finished as the team's top scorer for both the regular season and the playoffs.

Neil Pittock played goal in all or part of 33 or the team's 40 games during the season & playoffs and faced almost 900 shots .... after having only 6 games experience last season.

The Navy Vets had 2 players honoured by the NDJHL ...

Chase Thornton was named the West Division Top Rookie and Kyle Robertson was named the West Division Most Sportsmanlike Player.
