Goldie was the first superstar to emerge out of the jungle/drum and bass movement. But don't be fooled by the word superstar - Goldie is anything but a flash-in-the-pan pop culture flavor-of-the-week. Ever since 1995's Timeless, there have been thousands of imitators, all trying to steal a piece of drum and bass history, and all of them falling way short of the epic proportions of Goldie's early work. Goldie's second release, SaturnzReturn, was the first electronic album I ever purchased, yet it was not until I purchased Timeless did I become a true addict. Timeless seriously changed my life. Sounds pretty stupid, right? Wrong. This album is fucking amazing. Not only does it pull its weight on the dance floor or in any car with a decent soundsystem, but it also manages to cover more emotional ground than any electronic album in the past ten years. Sterile this is not.

But don't write off Goldie's other efforts just yet. While the critics may have hated SaturnzReturn, the critics can choke on their own urine. Of course it lacked the grandeur of Timeless, but the fact that the bulk of SaturnzReturn's first disc is a 60-minute and 15-second drum and bass symphony titled Mother, complete with 30-piece orchestra. Now Mother is what cost Goldie some points with the critics, which they often called too ambitious and pretentious. On the contrary, Mother covers a lot of ground in its sixty minute symphonic roller coaster ride.

Ring of Saturn was at best a b-sides album for SaturnzReturn, with a few highlights, but overall is for die-hard fans only. INCredible Sound and Goldie.co.uk are both remix albums that, while good in their own right, lack the vision of Goldie's earlier work simply because they're nothing more than reworks of other artist's material. But what the critics don't ever consider is that they can bitch until they're blue in the face but unless their audience is familiar with the work in question. With that said, I very, very, highly recommend you give Goldie a shot.
