This story made its first appearance on the HPG-Uplink forum back in October 2002.

Back then I was writing a fan-fiction called The Ballard of Cairo. I asked Marcus if he would allow me to use Shadow Company in The Ballard, and he said yes.

Now, I write a lot faster than Marcus, and in the time it took him to reach the halfway point in his story, I had finished The Ballard of Cairo, and was almost done on its sequel The Solaris Irregulars. Marcus then asked if he could use the characters I had created in his story.

Having used his in mine, I could hardly so no, and so began a rather unusual prose of two people trying to write two different story's side by side (I had started work on the concluding part of my trilogy, the as-yet unfinished Legacies of War), without messing it up for the other.

For the most part, we succeeded in meshing our two story's together, each using parts of the others to fill in the gaps (chapter 33 of Shadow Company is also chapter 11 of Legacies, while I used the dialog from chapter 32 of Shadow Company in chapter 10 of Legacies), and while Shadow Company has ended, Legacies of War continues.

I hope to start adding The Ballard of Cairo to this archive soon, so you can see what that is about.
