Almost 18 percent of the earths supply of surface fresh water is
contained in the Great Lakes.
Water is essential to life, but great expanses of water can also be a
hostile environment. Searching for a lost object just a few hundred feet
under water can be a daunting task, requiring special equipment and
training. The cold dark depths of any great body are also mysterious, and
in some ways frightening, because they conceal the unknown.
Many stories have been written of weird and unexplained happenings in
an area off Florida known as the Bermuda Triangle.
It is said that in this area, boats and planes have disappeared in good
weather with no evidence ever found as to why they vanished. UFO
sightings are supposedly frequent in the area. Many boats have also reported
compass failures and unexplained trouble inside the triangle.
But did you know that almost at our very doorstep, another mysterious
triangleEexists? The triangle I am speaking of is known as the
Michigan Triangle. The boundaries are said to be from Ludington, Mich., to
Benton Harbor, Mich., and then across the lake to Manitowoc and back to
Ludington.

DEEP in the basement of a dusty university library in Edinburgh lies a
small black box, roughly the size of two cigarette packets side by
side, that churns out random numbers in an endless stream.
At first glance it is an unremarkable piece of equipment. Encased in
metal, it contains at its heart a microchip no more complex than the ones
found in modern pocket calculators.
But, according to a growing band of top scientists, this box has quite

plenty of books. But 60 years after Nazi officers hid metal boxes in
the
depths of Lake Toplitz, a new attempt is being made to recover the
Third
Reich's fabled lost gold.
The Austrian government has given a US team permission to make an
underwater expedition to the log-infested bottom of the lake. Treasure
hunters have been flocking to Lake Toplitz ever since a group of
diehard
Nazis retreated to this picturesque part of the Austrian Alps in the
final months of the second world war.
With US troops closing in and Germany on the brink of collapse, they
transported the boxes to the edge of the lake, first by military
vehicle
and then by horse-drawn wagon, and sunk them.
Nobody knows exactly what was inside. Some believe they contained gold
looted by German troops throughout Europe and carried back to Germany.
Others that they contain documents showing where assets confiscated
from
Jewish victims were hidden in Swiss bank accounts.
The state company which controls the lake, Bundesforste AG, has signed
a
contract with Norman Scott, an American treasure hunter, who hopes to
solve the mystery.
Later this month Mr Scott will begin a detailed underwater survey of
the
107 metre deep lake, though there is profound official scepticism that
there is anything left to find.

earliest known ancestor of modern humans? Or does it belong elsewhere

the evolutionary tree? The answer has been hotly debated, but now two
studies argue that it does indeed belong on the human branch.
In 2002, scientists announced finding jaw fragments, some isolated
teeth
and a skull of a creature nicknamed "Toumai" in Chad. At some 6 million
to 7 million years old, the fossils came from around the time of a
major
split in the evolutionary tree, with one branch leading eventually to
humans and the other branch leading to chimps.

QUESTION:
In a letter from this entity in Utah, J.R., he writes about something
and I'd like to ask if this information is true. He writes: "You most
likely have heard of the Mormon Church, LDS, Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, here in Utah, of which they control the total state
in all fields and phases of human endeavors. They have built temples in
100 countries. The missionaries in all these countries, including the
USA work with the CIA. As the missionaries can get into countries where
the CIA cannot, they collect information on the people and everything
of
any and all nature, the countries' government and all their activities.
All this world-wide information is shared with the CIA and it is fed
into three of the largest computers in the world, church-owned, here in
Salt Lake City. This church is one of the most powerful and rich
organizations in the world today. It has one of the largest and secret
police force in the world. I have collected this kind of information
for
45 years. The above is not all they are into. A high official of this
church was recently kicked out of the church as he got too snoopy and
asked too many questions. He came to me a few months ago and told me
what happened. He said that his life had been threatened if he told
anyone of what he had found out. So he told me that if anything
happened
to him, to release the information he gave me. This information
concerns
a giant cavern beneath Salt Lake City and the Wasatch mountain range.
It
goes north to Idaho and south clear down past the Arizona line, with
offshoots west into Nevada and east into Colorado. This cavern has been
common knowledge for over 120 years. Many cases over the years has
appeared in the news papers of people and groups of people going into
the cavern, but never coming out. Several did find their way out, were
hopelessly insane. At least that's what the newspaper said about them.
At present, the Archaeological Dept. of Utah are down in southeastern
Utah looking for a certain entrance into this cavern that fellow by the
name of John Brewer of Manti, Utah, discovered around 30 years ago. He
brought out of the cavern quite a few ancient plates of an unknown
language. Some of the plates were gold, some silver, brass copper and
clay. He also saw many strange things he won't talk about, such as what
he thought were weapons of crystal. His son was tortured and killed by
some unknown person or persons trying to force the secrets out of him.
The church wanted the plates in the worst way -- they still do. The
information I was given by this former member of the Church is very
close to being the same as Dulce, New Mexico. Like he told me, "After
all, where on earth would be a better contact point for the aliens than
Utah, with thousands of miles of deserts and places not even on the
present-day maps. Plus a large and powerful organization with
hospitals,
schools and universities where aliens could undergo physical changes,
educated in our languages and customs, using research labs, some of the
best in the United States. A lot of genetic experiments and research is
also going on here in different laboratories. Thousands of children and
adults have vanished with out a trace of most of them, here in Utah.
The
fellow who is giving me this information also mentioned that for years
now, the Church has been working on a vault-like repository in the
mountains behind Salt Lake (East) part of the upper cavern to put all
the church records, secret documents, and other valuables for safe
keeping. He said for over a period of time he helped on this detail.
Several times he said he spotted several small humanoids with extra-
large eyes watching them from a distance. He said there was a lot of
building going on in a lower portion of the cavern. He heard motor
dynamos, the high whine of generators and voices. All this he said has
been going on for over 15 years that he knew of. He said his curiosity
got the best of him one day, he slipped away from the work gang he was
in and went down to a lower part of the cavern. He came to some
buildings with lots of rooms. There was a lot of building and other
activity going on. There were many men and women working on work
benches
with computers, and building electronic units of some kind. Among these
workers were more of these small humanoids with big black eyes. When he
started back, two security officers caught him and escorted him back to
the repository vault, where they reported his actions and wanderings
into the off limits area, to his superiors. They in turn put him on a
truck and sent him back to town. He was warned to keep his mouth shut
about what he saw. They told him what was going on down there was a
U.S.
government operation and was Top Secret. If he talked about it to any
one, he would get 20 years in a Federal prison or worse. He kept asking
questions to different members he thought were friends. Someone
reported
him. In turn he was apostated from the Church, with a death threat.
This
is the third time in the last 20 years I have heard about this activity
from different friends of mine who are members of this church. I didn't
pay too much attention to it until I received the info on "The Web of
Conspiracy" and Dulce, New Mexico which your organization sent out to
me.
I think its high time to put this info out to the public. Most
people are so brainwashed by the church here, and by television, that
most people won't believe any of it anyway. But I believe there are
people in this land of ours who will believe. Those are the ones who
need all the information of this nature they can receive. At least they
will be aware of the existing situation and won't be so easily trapped.
They in turn can help others. If you receive this letter, let me know.

That was the end of his letter, and I'd like to ask Awareness, is this
information basically true?

Archaeologists working in the extreme desert terrain of the Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region have moved a step closer to unraveling the
mystery of a 40-century-old civilization.
They unearthed 163 tombs containing mummies during their ongoing and
long excavation at the mysterious Xiaohe tomb complex.
And it's all thanks to the translation of a diary kept by a Swedish
explorer more than 70 years ago.
"We have found more than 30 coffins containing mummies," said Idelisi
Abuduresule, head of the Xinjiang Cultural Relics and Archaeology
Institute and the excavation team.
The complex is believed to contain 330 or so tombs buried in several
layers within a 2,500-square-meter sand dune.
"Most of the items are in the original state of the time when they were
buried, and that will help reveal a lot of information about the
society and life style of the people of that time," said Idelisi, during his
trip back from the desert dust and heat to the autonomous region's
capital Urumqi to record the finds, and store the artifacts.
The Xiaohe tombs are believed to have been the burial site of the
mysterious Loulan Kingdom, which disappeared without historical trace about

Atlantis. With the release of Disney's film Atlantis: The Lost Empire
(2001), interest in the concept hit a new high. I have always had an
interest in Atlantis (and its Eastern counterpart, Lemuria or Mu) in its
various manifestations, from Plato to the antediluvian
world of the book of Genesis where my Nephilim namesakes ruled as
"mighty ones of old, ones of renown" to similar concepts in many other
cultures. H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos partake of the idea as well, as
does JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.
It is truly a universal myth, which makes this early "master
civilization" a historical reality and/or something necessary to the human
psyche.
In a conversation between Dr. Michael A. Aquino and myself concerning
Atlantis, he stated: "I like the idea of Atlantis, and devoted a
category of the Temple
of Set's Reading List to it when the List was first created. It's too
bad that several of the works on it are now out-of-print, as they were
there because of some very interesting points - even if amidst some
wilder speculations. Today's stuff is pretty coffeetable by comparison.
"I say tosh on the notion of Santorini's being Atlantis, although it
has certainly done wonders for Santorini's tourism and T-shirt trade.
"I think Atlantis is buried under all that volcanic rock covering the
submerged part of the Azores. But I lack the diving equipment,
expertise, and patience to go digging it up." Dr. Aquino continues that he hopes
that renewed interest in the subject will inspire an
expedition to do just that.
Concerning the matter of Lemuria/Mu, Dr. Aquino points to what he wrote
in a 1984 issue of Runes, the newsletter of the Order of the Trapezoid:
"... after Darwin's Origin of Species was published in 1859, ... among
the phenomena most troubling to the Darwinists was the little lemur,
since it [together with other fossil, flora, and fauna specimens] was
found in such non-connected locales as Madagascar,
India, Africa, and the Malay Archipelago. English Zoologist Philip
Sclater hypothesized a primeval land-mass covering this entire area. In
honor of the lemur he called it "Lemuria". Little did he expect what a
Frankenstein Monster he had created! Some of
the more speculative scientists promptly added to the hypothesis. In
the 1870s German naturalist Ernst Haeckel went so far as to propose
Lemuria as the ancient home of the human race:
"'Of the five now-existing continents neither Australia nor America nor
Europe can have been this primeval home [of man], or the so-called
'Paradise' the 'cradle of the human race'. Besides southern Asia, the only
other of the now-existing continents which might be viewed in this
light is Africa. But there are a number of circumstances, especially
chronological facts, which suggest that the primeval home of man was a
continent now sunk beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean, which extended
along the south of Asia, as it is at present (and probably in direct
connection with it), towards the east, as far as Further India and the
Sunda Islands; towards the west as far as Madagascar and the southeastern
shores of Africa ... By assuming this Lemuria to have been man's
primeval home, we greatly facilitate the explanation of the geographical
distribution of the human species by migration.'
"The occultists came running. First on board was Helena Blavatsky of
the Theosophical Society. In her 1888 book The Secret Doctrine she avowed
that the "Book of Dzyan" included an account of Lemuria in addition to
Atlantis. Her "Third Root Race" consisted
of Lemurians (as "gigantic, brainless, apelike creatures"). [The fourth
RR was Atlantis. Current humanity is the fifth. The Sixth will evolve
from us and return to Lemuria, while the Seventh will chuck Earth
altogether and emigrate to Mercury.]
"Later Theosophists embellished Blavatsky's Lemurian mythos, most
notably Annie Besant and W. Scott-Elliot in his The Story of Atlantis and
the Lost Lemuria (1896). Scott-Elliot's account went into extraordinary
detail, offering a sinister picture of semi-reptilian Lemurians [shades
of V] who kept pet dinosaurs ..."
Aquino continued in our conversation: "There are plenty of Atlantean
colonies around the planet, from Heligoland in the north to Crete and
Egypt in the Mediterranean, weird stuff in North and South America, and of
course a resort hotel and casino in Reno, Nevada.
"One of the largest colonies of the Lemurian Lizardmen was located
under Los Angeles, more or less in the vicinity of Dodger Stadium." The
good Dr. Aquino illustrated this idea in his "Indiana Jones" short story,
Grail Mission.
"Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Starship alerted me to all the Nameless
Rites and Unspeakable Orgies routinely orchestrated by Atlantimurians
at Mount Shasta (beware of the caves & tunnels around Panther Meadow and
Bunny Flat!), and in certain shunned areas of Australia and of course
Ponape (Lovecraft's R'lyeh).
"I'm fairly certain that some of the L.A. Lemurians dug those tunnels
under the San Francisco Seacliff area that led to that sealed trapdoor
in the basement of Anton LaVey's home at 6114 California Street. The
occasional catastrophic sinkholes that swallow houses in that part of San
Francisco are clearly just a warning ..."

There are many theories about a land called Lemuria, Pacifica, or Mu.
Most of what is written is metaphoric - linking to the patterns of
creation and sacred geometry.

at the same time. All realities are created based on the numeric

Lemuria is a grid program that exists parallel to our own. Those who
feel linked to it - are more-than-likely experiencing in both realities
simultaneously.
In truth - Lemuria - from our perspective in third dimension - is
theoretical and will not merge with us - until a point at which we
expand our consciousness to fully understand all of our
multi-dimensional experiences. We are moving to that end now.
Stone markers are found in our reality to remind us of ancient and lost

Theories About Lemuria

James Churchward, in books such as The Lost Continent of Mu (1931),
wrote that the Motherland stretched from the Hawaiian Islands to Fiji
and from Easter Island to the Marianas. Churchward considered the Nan
Modal site on Pohnpei Island one of the seven sacred cities of Mu.
Today
its ruins sit on a swampy lagoon filled with mangrove trees. Rising
about 30 feet in height, black volcanic stones weighing many tons are
stacked crisscross like a child's frontier fort. It's one of the more
enigmatic sites in the entire Pacific, yet archaeologists cannot
explain
how it got there.
Indeed, stone monuments of mysterious origin dot the entire Pacific,
from Japan's spectacular underwater site at Yonaguni to cryptic

from dressed and fitted stone slabs like something ancient Romans would

course there is Easter Island, centerpiece of many Lemuria theories.
Its
hundreds of colossal stone statues and written language point to an
advanced culture, yet it appeared on the world's most remote spot. Why?
The legends of Easter Island speak of Hiva, which sank beneath the
waves
as people fled, while Samoans called a similar place Bolutu. It was
stocked with trees and plants bearing fruits and flowers, which were
immediately replaced when picked. On Bolutu men could walk through
trees, houses, and other physical objects without any resistance. The
Maoris of New Zealand still talk about arriving long ago from a sinking
island called Hawaiki, a vast and mountainous place on the other side
of
the water.
There's yet another puzzling piece of evidence. A map of the lost
continent published by the Lemurian Fellowship corresponds almost
exactly to boundaries of the Pacific Plate. But the map first appeared
long before geologists even knew of the plate's existence. Their
detailed map places the capital just north of present day Maui, near
the
center of a vast continent stretching from Australia to the Rocky
Mountains!
The finding of one of James Churchward's Mu books gave the band its
name
and their obsession with this fabled lost continent. Anglo-American
explorer, James Churchward, who later termed himself 'Colonel' was a
close friend of Auguste and Alice Le Plongeon. This French doctor and
his wife had propounded the theory of the sunken lost civilization of
Atlantis in the later part of the 19th when all manner of occult and
theosophical speculation was rife.
Although they had done legitimately useful work in discovering and
photographing ancient Mayan cities that had been lost in the jungles of
Central America, the Le Plongeons' theories were based on fanciful and
widely inaccurate translations of Mayan texts alongside all manner of
pseudo-historical and scientific hokum. They had a Queen Moo who ruled
over the ancient Mayan civilization and the couple went on to construct
an ever more elaborate 'history' for Atlantis and created a sub-culture
of 'occult' writing that continues to this day.
It seems that Churchward wanted an ancient civilization of his own, and
using Le Plongeon's doubtful methodology set about 'discovering' one.
His findings were set down in the five main volumes of the Mu series
published during the 1920s and 30s.
According to author Churchward - Lemuria or Mu - was about 5,000 miles
long and 3,000 miles wide, a beautiful tropical paradise like the
Garden
of Eden.
The basic premise is that by studying various ancient texts Churchward
had discovered the existence of a long lost continent with an advanced
civilization that 60,000 years ago had sunk below the Pacific Ocean
after a cataclysmic earthquake. There were 64 million people who died
in
the sinking, and that it dated back over 50,000 years. The Hawaiian
Islands and the Pacific Islands are the remaining mountain peaks of the
lost continent.
Precise detailed maps of the lost continent of Mu and Atlantis were
found on stone tablets from Pre-Inca Ica, Peru, by Dr. Javier Cabrera,
engraved in stone and photographed by Robert Charroux. United Nations
diplomat Farida Iskoviet, assistant to United Nations President Adam
Malik, came to Maui in 1972 and researched Lemurian ruins and history
and concluded that they were real. One of Hawaii's leading authorities
on Lemurian research was Sgt. Williard Wannall from Army Intelligence
in
Oahu. He reported that ruins of a submerged Lemurian city was between
Maui and Oahu. It was a Top Secret project in Naval Intelligence in
1972.
Volume #1 - The Lost Continent of Mu set out Churchward's theory
utilizing a "vast knowledge of science, ancient art and history,
mythology and the occult" to recreate the splendor and doom of this
hidden antediluvian world. The Garden of Eden was not in Asia but on a
now sunken continent in the Pacific Ocean. The Biblical story of
Creation came first not from the peoples of the Nile or the Euphrates
Valley but from this now-submerged continent, Mu - the Motherland of
Man.
Volume #2 - The Children of Mu The strange, true story of the pioneers
of Mu. According to the back cover, "Sixty-three million people lived
on
the now lost continent of Mu over 200,000 years ago. The children of Mu
became the most influential people on Earth. America was one of the
first colonies of Mu...Mu had an incredibly sophisticated government,
flowering of culture and scientific technology." Much of the Lemurian
civilization lived in homes with transparent roofs. They were free from
stress and disease lived to be hundreds of years old, developing their
E.S.P. abilities through nearly 40,000 years of societal practice and
experimentation. With that many centuries of evolution, the Lemurians
gained their reputation or telepathy, astral travel and teleportation -
making land vehicles unnecessary. They were primarily socially a
vegetarian, agricultural, outdoor, organic culture that worked in
harmony with nature and the land, having little use for scientific
technology.
During that time, they had to build their shelter, make their own
clothing, gather their own food, make their own tools, and provide for
each other without getting into any argument or projecting any
negativity toward each other.
Volume #3 - The Sacred Symbols of Mu, "the strange, true story of the
occult origins of ancient and modern religions." The book says that
"all
religions have a common origin in the Sacred Inspired Writings of Mu.
Evidence of this original religion dates back 170,000 years ago. Osiris
(who lived 20,000 BC) and Jesus taught identically the same religion.
Both learned from this ancient book. Moses condensed the forty-two
questions of the Osirian religion into the Ten Commandments. The Lord's
Prayer is to be found in The Sacred Inspired Writings of Mu. Jesus
condensed the text to suit the languages of his day. And the Last Words
of Jesus on the cross were in the language of Mu - unknown in
Palestine!"
Volume #4 - The Cosmic Forces of Mu - Churchward mocks the sacred cows
of modern science and reveals that biological evolution is a myth, that
there is no such thing as atomic force, that all disease can be
conquered by using appropriately colored light rays, that the Earth's
temperatures and seasons have become inalterably fixed in their present
state and that the earth cannot be hurled off into space or drawn into
the sun.
Volume is #5 - Second Book of the Cosmic Forces of Mu - Churchward
continues to draw conclusions from the ancient documents and lore of Mu
to present some startling revisionist theories about the age of the
Earth, the nature of mountains and volcanic processes, and the Ice Age
and Flood.

Lemuria millions of years ago.
Yet most sources define the Lemurian era as roughly 75,000 to 20,000
B.C. - prior to Atlantis.
Some scholars believe the two civilizations co-existed for thousands of
years. We will never be able to confirm this.
A group of geologists - called Catastrophists - creation after
catastrophe - believe a continent called Pacifica existed within the
last 100,000 years, and that its fairly rapid submersion caused

Reverse Engineering Extraterrestrial UFO communication systems for next

One of the major goals of defense engineers and scientists is to
develop a next generation communication system for the military that cannot
be intercepted or jammed by any existing terrestrial technologies.
Conceptually it is not easy. If there is a lock and key, then it is just a
matter of time that an expert thief will find out a way to break into
the lock and key mechanism. That same applies to Firewalls in Cyber
communication. The concept makes you believe that there is no other way than
keeping a mile ahead of the thieves.
However when engineers started looking at the extraterrestrial UFOs and
tried to reverse engineer their technologies, they could not find any
terrestrial communication techniques that they use. The question came to
mind what if they do not have a visible lock and key?EHow can a thief
break the lock and key if they cannot see one?
Extra-terrestrial UFOs communicate without any physical means of
communication. That is why those who are waiting with big antennae to hear
them, will wait forever. Engineers understand that if these UFOs never
communicated in any terrestrially known wavelengths, because they will be
caught. They changed those techniques almost eighty years back when
Germans with their early Radars first understood the presence of the UFOs
and kept quiet about all that trying to reverse engineer their
technologies.
Engineers slowly realized that there are other methods of communication
that what we normally use in terrestrial terms. Otherwise plants will
not be able to communicate with each other. Experiments show that plants
can warn other plants about insects attacking the same. Plants
communicate with other plants by changing the chemical signature of the
environment. That is one method also used by the extraterrestrials. But that
cannot allow them to communicate between the satellite ship and the
mother ship or to the nearest constellation they come from.
Engineers then focused on ionization of the environment. They realized
that changing the ion characteristics of the environment close to the
receiver receiving the signal does the extraterrestrial UFO
communication. If space can be bent and the environment close to the entity
receiving the signal can be changed, then the communication can be made where
the terrestrial technologies cannot even see or feel what is going on.
Engineers focused on simulating the effects of bending the space. The
computer models confirmed. And now the challenge begins in creating the
next generation communication systems where space is bent and the
receivers surrounding environment is changed in a micro-controlled fashion.

As we reach out to space and explore the unknown, scientists are still
trying to understand the process of controlling tectonic movements.
While there are long term research going on manipulating earths
ionosphere, magnetosphere and radiation belts, in the short term,
extra-terrestrial UFOs are providing clues to the technologies for controlling local
tectonic movements.
Reverse engineering extra-terrestrial UFO propagation systems provides
clues to anti-gravity forces. While modeling the flight patterns of
these UFOs, scientists and engineers realized the presence and use of dark
matter. A lot of research is going on in modeling and isolating dark
matter to generate the necessary forces to counteract the tectonic forces
that cause shift in continental and oceanic crusts through the plate
movements.
The application of the dark matter or the source of anti-gravity force
has to be controlled through a complex algorithm that allows
incremental release and withdrawal of energy. The simulation models show how a
series of programmed occurrence of neutron bomb explosion can create the
necessary force to create an earthquake. When reversing the algorithmic
model, it can also show the process by which dark matter can be used to
counteract and neutralize that effect though simulated computer
controlled implosions.
It is not necessarily true that dark energy has to be used. It can be
any other energy including electromagnetic induction. Another method
suggested is something that scientists and engineers are also reverse
engineering from the extraterrestrial UFOs. It is the process of generating
electromagnetic momentum. This electromagnetic momentum can be seen as
a radiation pressure. Many Space Research Agencies are designing
spaceships that can go far from the earth using radiation pressure from the
Sun as a propulsion system. Anti-gravity forces provide the
counteraction to gravitational forces. The same technology can be used in massive
scale to generate perpetuating implosion phenomenon to counter the
tectonic forces in the areas that are sensitive due to large population
base.
The real trick, the scientists find, is in programming these implosions
to counteract the forces of two plates moving apart. The same holds
true in applying intelligent sequence of explosions to two plates
colliding with each other. The computer algorithm becomes more complex when the
one plate moves under the other in case of two plates colliding in
oceanic crust.

there's no better time to say: you were right, and we were wrong.
In retrospect, this magazine's coverage of so-called evolution has been
hideously one-sided. For decades, we published articles in every issue
that
endorsed the ideas of Charles Darwin and his cronies. True, the theory
of common
descent through natural selection has been called the unifying concept
for all of
biology and one of the greatest scientific ideas of all time, but that
was no
excuse to be fanatics about it. Where were the answering articles
presenting
the powerful case for scientific creationism? Why were we so unwilling
to
suggest that dinosaurs lived 6,000 years ago or that a cataclysmic
flood carved the
Grand Canyon? Blame the scientists. They dazzled us with their fancy
fossils,
their radiocarbon dating and their tens of thousands of peer-reviewed
journal
articles. As editors, we had no business being persuaded by mountains
of
evidence.
Moreover, we shamefully mistreated the Intelligent Design (ID)
theorists by
lumping them in with creationists. Creationists believe that God
designed all
life, and that's a somewhat religious idea. But ID theorists think that
at
unspecified times some unnamed superpowerful entity designed life, or
maybe just
some species, or maybe just some of the stuff in cells. That's what
makes ID a
superior scientific theory: it doesn't get bogged down in details.
Good journalism values balance above all else. We owe it to our readers
to
present everybody's ideas equally and not to ignore or discredit
theories simply
because they lack scientifically credible arguments or facts. Nor
should we
succumb to the easy mistake of thinking that scientists understand
their fields
better than, say, U.S. senators or best-selling novelists do. Indeed,
if
politicians or special-interest groups say things that seem untrue or
misleading,
our duty as journalists is to quote them without comment or
contradiction. To
do otherwise would be elitist and therefore wrong. In that spirit, we
will end
the practice of expressing our own views in this space: an editorial
page is
no place for opinions.
Get ready for a new Scientific American. No more discussions of how
science
should inform policy. If the government commits blindly to building an
anti-ICBM defense system that can't work as promised, that will waste
tens of billions
of taxpayers' dollars and imperil national security, you won't hear
about it
from us. If studies suggest that the administration's antipollution
measures
would actually increase the dangerous particulates that people breathe
during
the next two decades, that's not our concern. No more discussions of
how
policies affect science either - so what if the budget for the National
Science
Foundation is slashed? This magazine will be dedicated purely to
science, fair and
balanced science, and not just the science that scientists say is
science.
And it will start on April Fools' Day.
